Hello everyone. I recently purchased and installed a flip-top for my US v7 PS2. I think I did the installation correctly as I can still play all of my original PS2 games. However, the Swap Magic disc will not load at all. When I load it in I get the "disc read error" message from the Browser screen. I've tried cleaning the lens, but unfortunately I don't have access to another PS2 to test the SM3plus discs. Note that neither the DVD nor CD disc work. Also, and this may be a stupid observation, the two discs are labeled as "Magic 3 plus" not Swap Magic 3 Plus as I had ordered. Is a working SM3plus disc labeled with the full title or not? Finally, I would like to ask what the different versions of SM3 are for, such as:USA version, Pal version, Jap version. I have the USA version but I am unsure if this is the right version to play Japanese imports with on my US PS2.

Any and all help is greatly appriciated.

Looking at the discs I have here, it says "Swap Magic 3 plus", and at the bottom it says "PAL Version 3.6" (I have the PAL version obviously since I'm in New Zealand)

Your USA version is correct before your console is the US version (the version of swap magic should be the same as your console), I suggest you get in contact with whoever you bought this from and ask them about it. Because swap magic discs should boot up (whether or not you've installed your fliptop properly will determine if your backups can boot up properly or not though) just like your originals.

I'd like to reopen this topic for answers. I checked around on the net and found that the "Magic 3 Plus" is for the USA version only. example from the SwapMagic website:
http://www.swapmagic3.com/sm3.jpg

Unfortunatly that still doesn't help me to figure out why I keep getting disc read errors for both CD n DVD discs. Right now I'm going to reinstall my old case and try the discs with that but after that I'm looking for ideas. Is my only hope going to be returning the discs and praying that the new ones work? If anyone has had this much trouble please let me know how you got through it. Thank you in advance.

Not true - there's NTSC and PAL versions.

disc read errors
Let me get this straight:
- Your original game works
- Swap magic discs doesn't work
- Backup discs doesn't work (obviously if the second one doesn't work this won't work)
Correct?

If that's the case then you either have the wrong version swap magic for your console (e.g. NTSC swap magic for PAL console or vice versa), or the copy you have is dodgy

I made a grammatical error when stating that "'Magic 3 Plus' is for the USA version only." What I meant was that the disc cover reads Magic 3 Plus on the USA version while the other versions have Swap Magic 3 Plus.

As to your second response dan, yes the originals work but Swap magic doesn't work. Also, I am in the USA with a new v7 PS2 bought from EB Games in the USA and USA copy of SM3P so I am fairly certain that my PS2 is NTSC along with my discs.

Since these conditions are both true
USA PS2 and
USA/NTSC SM3
then the problem must be the discs correct?

Also I finished replacing the original CD/DVD Bay housing and SM3 still won't boot up.

Hmm.... not sure where the word "swap" is on your disc... :p

I'd bring the disc back and state the problem, and ask them to give you a refund or a new set of discs, it'll be a good idea to test it out in the store while you are there to make sure it works :)

Well, I was hoping you wouldn't say that :(
You see I ordered SM3p off a website and this site has a nasty habit of not answering questions about their products. Oh well.
Moving on, to answer you beginning comment the word "Swap" only appears on the side of the disc which tells the homesite for SM3P. But as I said in the last post there is a pic of the disc covers on the website which shows the USA DVD version w/o Swap in the title just Magic 3 Plus. This is shown with the Jap SM3P and PAL SM3P which each have the full title.

How did you pay for this? If you used credit card you may be able to ask the credit card company to reverse the transaction, otherwise you may be stuck with a set of discs that can't do anything :(

What I suggest is you try out the discs on a friend's PS2 and see if it loads, also if you can borrow a set of swap magic from someone to see if it works on your console would be helpful too. Apart from that though, it'll be down to dealing with the store that you bought the discs from
