Any 'not' Crippled DVD Recorders Out There?

Are there any 'not' crippled DVD Recorders out there? By that I mean any that can record 'copyright protected' videos? I mean, fine and well, and I understand 'pirating', but even my 15 year old VCR can copy a show off HBO for cripes sake!!

Thanks for the reply. Solved the problem by taking the LG back and picking up a Panasonic and a GoDVD unit. Works just great.

I am considering purchasing either the Panasonic DMR-ES25S and/or ES45VS. I have heard of compatability issues concerning playback of previously-recorded homemade disc, and I also have concerns as to whether or not these recorders can be configured to record copy protected media, such as store bought DVDs, for personal use. A universal question: can most or all of todays recorders (including VCR), be hacked to record copy protected material?
Any feedback is informative.

If by this you mean a present day NEW unit? I don't believe you will find any, If you do please post it. I also asked this back in July

i guess i meant primarily DVD recorders (and possibly VCRs), but most importantly, DVD recorders.

I didn't get much out of site given by [catfreek], as it seemed to address primarily LiteOn/Ilo recorders. However, I do have an Ilo, and it is the one I am trying to replace, unless I can fix it. (The tray won't stay closed.) To date, it is the only brand (and only older models)that I know to be able to record copy protected material.

If your ilo is the '04' model, you can replace the drive in it with a LiteOn drive . .

Yes Victor, It is an Ilo DVDR04, and I was just informed earlier on another forum site that I may be able to replace the dvd drive with some older model drives, such as the 411, 812 or 1693 drives. So I will start looking for them. Do you know if one of these is better than the other for this repair? Do you know if is it just a simple matter of unplugging the old one, and plugging in the new one?

NO; I never received a reply. I do not believe such a unit is available; NEW
I have a LiteON 5045 and [2] iloRHD04, all with replacement DVD drives. [2[ LiteOn 5005, and a iloR04 they now have the original 451s drives but have had other drives.
I would recommend a LiteOn drive but it has been reliably reported that a BenQ 1620 work ok
LiteOn units from 1693s DOWN work fine on all functions. The 160p and UP work on all functions EXCEPT Fast Forward its use will lock up the unit.
The site given by [catfreek] is a good one and will direct one to a proper site.
As to LiteOn REMEMBER ilo [The 04 series NOT the 05] is LiteON
The effort to replace a drive is mostly how one wants it to look'Other than that it is a matter of unpluging and pluging
If one is interested in saving either from the dead.
Look at that site carefully.

As to saving from the dead
All the ilo 04 units and Many LiteOn units are more than worth it and any effort for it
I have used practicly all drives 1693s and Down with no problems.
Be aware that these drives will not be hacked [region free] as the original. The hack will take but ignore any drive update. If region free is desired it will have to be done in a PC.

While I do not use any but, region 1. It would be nice if the replacement drives were region free .
A new [No region set] replacement drive will have to be region set in a PC as the recorder will not set it and will not play a disk if not region set. It will record
I have not tried very hard [or much at all] but have been Un-ucesfull even with LNF RRC. as to region set.
If anyone has an answer that works Let me know
