I was having problems with my PC running a lot slower, than it used to. I did a format on the hard drive and reinstalled a clean copy of Windows. Now everything seems so much faster, except for my burning speed. The burner is a 16x DVD+/-R, but I always had a problem with skipping if I burned above 8x, so I always just set it at 8x. I use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink the most, and it only burns at 1.2x, even though I set it at 8x. Why is it going so slow? When I got it, I never needed any drivers or anything for it. It uses standard drivers on WinXP. It's on its own IDE Channel. What is causing it to only max out at 1.2x? Maybe it is using the wrong driver or something? I dunno. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Make sure your drive(s) are in DMA mode and not PIO mode. If it is in PIO mode, you'll need to change it. Here is a link to help you:
http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm

Also, it is not recommended to burn faster than 8x. It's recommended to burn at half the media speed. Examples: 16x - Burn at 8x or lower or 8x - Burn at 4x or lower

Personally, I backup all of my movies using good media and I only burn at 4x.

Ya, its in DMA mode. I still don't understand, because it's a 16x max burner, and where you select the speed, it's going all the way up to 40x. I remember before, it only allowed me to burn at 16x max. Something is definitely wrong. Just don't know what. Ya, I only burn at 8x too. Anything faster skips. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

40X probably would be max CD burn speed. What is the max ripping speed you're obtaining?

Let's get some more info:

Fire up DVD Decrypter.
Set the mode to ISO Write.
Insert a blank disk into the drive.

Copy and post the right hand column of info from DVD Decrypter back to this thread. The top line of the column should be the model designation of your burner.

Ya, the max it writes at with DVD Decrypter is 1.2x even though I set it at 8x to burn. The media is 16x max. Ya, it looks as though it is saying 40x max is the CD writing speed. But, DVD Decrypter is for DVD's, correct? It used to only put 16x max on the list, before I formatted and installed a clean install of winxp. Now I see 40x. So I don't know what's wrong. You think if I choose a higher speed, it will write faster? What cd speed equals an 8x DVD speed? I guess I can try it. Any info is appreciated.

I just checked my copy of DVD D. It actually goes up to 56X with nothing in the drive. Thus I don't think that means anything in your case either.

I still need the info I requested in the pior post from DVD Decrypter.

I don't know about that. Before my format and clean install of windowsxp, it would only go as far as the media was rated at. Now, it goes all the way up to 56x. I didn't understand what you meant before, but here is the stuff from DVD Decrypter:

DVD D goes up to 56X with no media in the drive. The speeds shown when a disk is in the drive are those the burner's firmware supports for that particular media. Decrypter only showed a max speed of 16X for this media according to what you posted.

The first thing you probably need to do is update your firmware. You have version 1.40 and the newest firmware for your burner is version 1.58. Here's a link to the firmware:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2017

It may be the case that your firmware is so out of date that it's having problems with this relatively new media from Sony. It may also be something else, but we won't know that until the firmware is updated.

I updated the FW now and that didn't fix the slow burning speed. I know the pins are set right. I haven't changed anything with the drive. I just did a clean install on windows and now it's slow. I am guessing its a driver thing. Anyone know a different driver that might work? I am out of ideas. Thanks for the help guys.

@mduga do you have 80 pin ide wires? check if you have a flat ribbon which i recommend changing to the small 80 pin circular ones count across the ribbon if you go half way and you have 20 wires you have a 40 pin wire; you need to get new cables that have 80 wires thats the only way you will get ultra dma 4 or 5 then you should be good let me know

Try physically uninstalling the drive by removing both the power and IDE cable. Restart the system a couple of times and then hook everything back up and restart again.

Are you burning with Decrypter via DVD Shrink. In others words are you creating an ISO file in Shrink and then firing up Decrypter to burn it or are you selecting Burn with DVD D as the target output in Shrink?

Have you tried dumping an ISO image file from Shrink and then burning that with ImgBurn?

http://www.imgburn.com (free)

Also try dumping files to a folder with Shrink and then burn those with Nero if you have it.

If either of these work, we're half way to diagnosing the problem as either hardware or software.
