burner bad on notebook??

I have an hp pavillion notebook with one drive dvd/cd burner. I use to be able to copy all my dvds with shrink and dvddecryptor fine. Now, its been about 8 months since I have tried to burn a movie and decryptor and I even tried imgburn won't burn to my blank dvd. I use Shrink to analyze and it seems to work fine and I save as an ISO image to burn with dvdd, but when i try to burn I get an error that says unable to read D/: Data Error cyclic redundancy check.
Is there anyway to know for sure if my dvd burner is bad and/or on its way out?? My warranty expires soon and i would like to get a new burner before that expires obviously. Thanks so much for any insight/help.

Two questions.
Is the firmware for you burner up-to-date?
What brand of media are you trying to burn to?

I'm not sure if the firmware is up to date. Can you tell me How I can find out and update if needed? The computer is about 2 years old. I am using maxell DVD+R x8 dvds. I have even tried another brand HP dvds. What brand do you use and what exactly does the x8, x2, x16, etc. mean? Is it better to use the lower #'s or higher ones? Any help/advice is much appreciated. Also, I am a kind of a beginner so could you explain in an easy to understand way. Thank you.

I need to know the make, model number of the burner and the current firmware version in order to tell if it is up-to-date. Since you said it is about 2 years old, my guess is that it is several versions behind.
Maxell and HP discs are not good quality. You need to get better discs. I only use Taiyo Yuden. They are becoming hard to find in local stores and best bought on-line. Another good quality media is Verbatim.
The 4X, 8X and 16X is the rated burn speed of the discs. I would recommend burning at 1/2 the rated speed. For example, if you have a disc that is rated at 8X, burn it at 4X. The exceptions would be high quality media with up-to-date firmware.

Thanks for responding. Can you tell me how to find out the make, and model number of my burner and the current firmware version?? I don't know how to look that up.
Also, when you say burn at about 1/2 the speed rate. Can I change the speed rate in dvdshrink and dvddecryptor? Where is the option located to change the speed because I never change mine and that may be my problem too because the discs are 16x.?? Thanks again I appreciate you helping me.

Since you have DVD Decrypter you can check the firmware with that.
Go to Tools > Drive > Check firmware updates. It will show your current version. The make and model number are listed in the Destination box. The speed setting is down toward the lower right hand corner of the main interface.

It says my current firmware version is 1.19 and then when I click "ok" it take me to a website the firmware page. However, I don't know what to do from there. Can you help me from that point? Thanks again

In the destination box in dvdd there is no make, model# of my burner. It just says capacity and free space. It also says just please select a folder but nothing about make or model#. Is there somewhere else to find that information? thanks

Open DVD Decrypter. Go to Mode > File. It should list the burner and model number. Post that information.

I don't belive this is the correct fourm concerning the original question
However It was said that the burner did work correctly some time ago and now gives a message that the drive is unable to read D/:
The syntax seems wrong. The fact that the message is [Can not read D/:] would lead to a belief that a D:\ drive is not responding The OS or other software could be a cause
I doesn't seem likely the burner firmware is the problem
PS
I have used many Maxell disks both + R/RW and -R/RW with no problems

@LCSHG I think you read the posts a little wrong. His error message is "Data Error cyclic redundancy check." This is a result of media error. This burner isn't "seeing" the blank media properly. Usually the cause of firmware out of date. Fix is to first update the firmware. If that doesn't work then try different (better quality) media.

The original post said ?unable to read D/: Data Error cyclic redundancy check? I assumed that as the unit was a notebook, D: was the burner. If he/she wanted to burn a disk it would have to be read first.
I have never encountered this message but have pursued CRC for info. So far I have not found any info that speaks to the firmware as a problem. Could you direct me to info pointing to firmware, as a CRC problem,
There is mention of a bad disk in the CRC info but it all seems to boil down to bad transfer, which could be corrupt data. Unfortunately if this happens with Audio/visual data, the data is, to all extents lost [not always] At this point I could not say it?s a bad burner, HDD disk or what. As I don?t think enough is known.
Below is a quote concerning CRC. I think it covers the issue fairly well
?There are plenty of technical resources on the Web that discuss cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs). Most times you won't need to worry about this technobabble. That is, until one it day it suddenly appears and you think - what the hell does that mean? In simple terms, a CRC is bit of mathematics used to ensure that your data is OK when being transfered. It's a checking procedure that quickly identifies when data has been damaged. If you get this message, it means that the file being read by your PC or software is corrupted. However, it does not mean all the data is lost forever. When data is transfered, it is usually in small blocks and each block is given a CRC value. If something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source and arrives at its destination, the CRC sent at the source will no longer match the one that is calculated when the data arrives - this is when the cyclic redundancy check error will appear.?

I just needed some simple guidance/help with dvdd and I am thankful that dolphin2 responded to my question and was willing to help me.
I am still trying to figure out though how to find out the make and model # of my burner. When I go to mode, file there is just a little checkmark there, but nothing appears. Could you give me an example of what a make and model # may look like?? I mean is it a name, just letters, numbers or a combination? I just don't know what I'm looking for. sorry....but I do appreciate it and now you REALLY got me curious as to what the make and model are!
BTW should a movie or a blank disc be in the drive before I open up dvdd or does it not matter??

@LCSHG If he was trying to read a disc and got CRC errors then I would agree with you. However, he is trying to write and getting them. Experience with Nero and other logs would indicate this is a case of not reading the write stratagy of the disc properly. Which is a firmware problem.
@renzandjo It will not matter if a disc is in the burner or not. Here is a picture of what to look for:

Your drive is an OEM specific type of drive. It's used by Dell, HP/Compaq, and others. While Dell has updated the firmware, HP hasn't. You have the latest version.
You could try cross-flashing it to another but that would void your warranty.
From what I've read about this drive, the problems are quite common.
My suggestions at this point are to try better media (as stated before) and if the errors still occur, have the drive replaced under warranty. Make sure you let them know you are unsatisified with this brand of burner. Don't let them give you a refurbished one of the same type. Demand a different (and hopefully) better one.
Good luck and keep me posted as to the outcome.

Thank you for your help. I bought some DVD+R Verbatim brand and I am able to burn! YAH!! I'm thrilled. I guess it really does matter the brand of media AND some burners just don't like certain brands of media and work well with others.
