My friend gave me an avi file on a cd and I used DVDShrink to convert it to dvd, but my sony player is saying it is area restricted. Is there any software that can remove regions from .avi files?

Hello.

I'm not sure how exactly you converted an AVI file with DVD Shrink, since it's not a video converter. All it does is recode DVD titles to make them fit on DVD5 discs.

Can you play the AVI file on your computer?

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

Yeah good call. Lol, sorry I forgot to say I converted it with VSO DivX to DVD, then burned the dvd with DVDShrink. Yeah, I can play the file fine on my comp through winamp, windows media and DivX player, but my Sony DVD Player says "Play restricted through area limitations" so I'm assuming that means its the wrong region. It has german text on the credits, so I believe that it was actually converted to AVI in Germany.

I know that some AVI carry viewing licenses. But I don't believe that type of file can be region coded like DVD's are. (at least not in the way that a standalone could detect. Plus I don't believe this information would be transferred while transcoding.)

I think the region problem is with either your Standalone DVD player or it occurs at the computer level. So...

1. Which country are you in? (to determine which DVD region you are in)

2. Also need to know. Which region your burner is. (right click on the drive icon in My Computer to get to properties. This will be in there. I forget which tab since I'm at work and my puter here only has a CD player. I think it's under "Region" but I'm not sure.

3. Where did you purchase you Standalone DVD player? (also to determine the region)

The burner and the Sony player are from the US so they are region 1 (I did check the drive properties, region 1). I am also in the US. Would the viewing license make the player respond this way?

Sorry about the delay. I was away for a couple days.

I was simply saying that AVI, WMA or other MPEG4 videos of this type are capable of containing a check for license that you would need to obtain to view the file. However, this is a rather uncommon thing.

If you were able to view this file on your computer without acquiring such a license, then it does not contain a license verification. Even if it did, I don't think it would still be there after converting.

DVD Shrink does not burn DVD's on it's own. It uses Nero's burning engine. Try bypassing DVD shrink and burn compilation with Nero directly. Make sure you use good quality media and burn it at half the disc's max speed. If you can, change the booktype for max compatibility and then try it again in your standalone.

The region settings in Shrink could be set to a region other than 1.

Let me know how it turns out. If this doesn't work, we'll have to try something else.
