I used DVD Shrink 3.2 to back up some original and copied DVD?s, however when I play them on my computer they work perfectly, but on my DVD player, you have to manually select what to watch and sometimes the sound also switches off. The burning software which I used is Sonic RecordNow 7. When I played one of my friends backed up DVD?s (DVD Shrink 3.2) it worked perfectly on my DVD player.

Can anyone tell me how the DVD?s aren?t working on my DVD player?

Thanks!!!

Hi There.

If I were you, I would ditch the Sonic. Try ripping your original with DVD shrink and make and .ISO disc image file with it. Burn the image to a disc with IMG burn.

Make sure you use good quality discs like Verbatim and you should be fine. If your burner is capable of booktyping, then get DVD+R and booktype to DVD-ROM. A problem like the one you have might also be caused by burning too fast. Know you burner's max burn speed and get the appropriate discs. A good rule of thumb is to try to burn at half the advertised disc speed. For example, for 8x discs, burn at 4x.

Do this and it should work without a problem.

Btw. what's the brand of the discs you used?

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

Hi Nick

Thanks for your help. I have now used a different burning software called Nero and now my DVDs play perfectly on my DVD player

I always try to get the best quality DVDs on market, recently I have used JVC DVD+RWs.

Thanks for your help once again.

Glad to hear your problem is solved. Nero is also my favorite burning software. I suggested IMG burn because it's free. Right now, I only use it to burn Dual layer images.

P.S: Some re-writable DVD's are okay, but you should know they don't normally have the same readability as regular recordable media since they don't use a dye recording layer. It is possible for them to degrade rather quickly. Some discs may last years, but it is possible also that they might not be usable after six months, though only in rare cases. Either way, I wouldn't recommend RW's for long term data storage.

Hi Nick

Thanks for the reply, what is IMG burn and how do you use it? I did download it for free but I didn't know how to use it, so then I downloaded a free 30 day trial of Nero.

What is the best Version of Nero? I was going to get the premium Edition from ebay.

IMG Burn is a free (as you already know) one click program that efficiently burn DVD image files to discs. It's very simple to use. You open it up, select a image file from you HDD, select the burn speed and booktype setting, click burn and voila!

As far as Nero goes, I would recommend against getting it from ebay. After all, all you're paying for is the registration key. You can download it for free, as you already have. Buying the Registration key unlocks it and removes the 30 trial limit.

Some versions of Nero 7, the latest one, can be a bit buggy. In fact, I still use Nero 6 as I don't yet see a reason to upgrade. If you must use version 7, then I suggest you get 7.0.8.2, which some agree is the most stable version of 7. You can get it here:

Hi Nick

Thanks for replying back. Where can I buy the Registration key from that unlocks it and removes the 30 trial limit and how much would it cost to get one, would it then change to the full version?

What are image files that you burn on to your DVD Disc using IMG Burn?

Hi.

You can buy Nero from this page. It will revert to the full version.

http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Products.html

If you have Nero 7.0.8.2 installed, you don't need to reinstall it. Just use the key to unlock it.

An Disc image file, also known as a ISO file, is a single file that contains an exact binary copy of the original disc it was made from. It is meant to be compatible with all computers as binary is universal. What IMG burn does is burn the disc image file to a disc in file structure. The end result is an exact copy of the original.
