I've run the gamut on my own on this one for a while now, and spotting this on a random Google search and spotting the tools like smitfraudfix and ewido to try on, I see that there's more to this than meets the eye.

I'm noticing that there are files that I KNOW I manually deleted via dos (the stdole one) magically reappeared. Whoever or whatever this thing is, its relentless. Thankfully I use firefox, but since most of my family also uses this pc, well ;/

I'm currently awaiting help regarding this issue, and I dont want to hit a post limit so I'm reposting. Sorry to moderators if this seems unnecessary.
I've read that AdAware and Spybot S&D dont really get this thing out as far as I know. My Mcafee isnt even saying a damn thing whether or not there's a virus on my system.

Can I be assured a full system reformat would clean my system?

							Hi roglok,
Restart your computer to the safemode and choose your normal user account -> http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

When in safemode, open SmitfraudFix folder and doubleclick the file smitfraudfix.cmd
Choose option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and pressing "Enter" in order to remove the infected files.

You are asked: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove your desktop wallpaper and the infected registry keys.

The tool checks if wininet.dll file is infected. You might be asked to replace the infected .dll (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool might have to restart your computer; if it won't do it, restart your computer back to normal mode.
A textfile will appear after the cleaning process, copy this file and paste it to here.

That log is saved to your local diskdrive, usually C:\rapport.txt.

Warning : Running option 2 in a clean computer will delete your desktop wallpaper.

Post a new HjT log and the contents of C:\Rapport.txt

Oddly enough after the safemode-clean drill, I come back to normal WinXP operations with Mcafee saying that "wincqt32.dll" is a genericdownloader.ab trojan, and cannot be quarentined nor deleted.

Sounds like it isnt over yet. BTW I've taken the liberty of turning off System Restore. Dont want any of this crap coming back to haunt me when i decide to use that.

2nd Note: My old IE homepage used to be the Windows Update one, but because of this dammed virus, I've tried repeatedly to change it to www.microsoft.com. I see its not working.

3rd note: I've went ahead and re-ran Mcafee, now it's telling me to restart to complete cleanig of "wincqt32.dll". I suspect this is a dummy dll?

							Hi roglok
Quote:Oddly enough after the safemode-clean drill, I come back to normal WinXP operations with Mcafee saying that "wincqt32.dll" is a genericdownloader.ab trojan, and cannot be quarentined nor deleted.

Yes that is bad file and reason to pop ups/hijack

Let McAfee do what it will :)

Scan hijack and mark and fix that:

 O20 - Winlogon Notify: wincqt32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wincqt32.dll

 Boot comp.

Send then a fresh hijack log

Yes, do it in safe mode. Ensure that your antivirus and Spybot are disabled. Spybot can prevent this fix.

I can assure you that wincqt32.dll file is GONE, but the registry entry wont remove itself even from safemode. This log btw is after safemode.

							Hi roglok
It have to remove manually from registry.

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

To resolve this issue, goto the 'start menu' and goto 'run'. Type in 'regedit' and press 'ok'. The Registry Editor will load. It is important that you follow these instructions as they are written since deleting the wrong thing can have serious implications on your computer. On the left you will have a group of directories, and on the right a window which displays what registry keys are in that particular registry directory. Proceed to goto 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' and expand it by clicking on the '+' symbol. Go to the 'Software' directory and then to 'Microsoft', then to 'Windows' and then to 'CurrentVersion', "Winlogon" and finally to the 'Notify
' directory. You should now be at the below directory:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
Don go any farther in the registry key ,,, look in the right hand pane for the registry editor if you see Value not set ignore the stuff below

Locate the wincqt32 directory entry marked in blue which is causing this issue and proceed to delete by highlighting and pressing the delete key.

Run a new Hijack and post back here
