I've considered getting a new faceplate since I have some scratch on the screen plus it looks like its starting to crack a bit near the bottom from being dropped lol but as a question for the people who have changed there PSP faceplates, it is difficult to do so. The one thing I see being a huge problem is that damn joystick. I don't see how you could get around it or remove it without breaking it.

Torx? No...

All you have to do is remove the analog hub by gently lifting it up like right now, unscrew the main piece to the hub (underneath the faceplate) and remove/replace buttons if needed.

I used a Phillips #000 and it's great for everything--the whole nine yards.

Not that bad for a face plate, but man, stay away from that lip plate!

Yeah I took up that shit in grade 7. its looks quite painful but I guess you get use to it if you start off small.

u probably have ur warranty xpired since ur psp sounds old..but i've heard that u can peel the sticker off without damaging the seal
anyway back to ur question
i changed my psp face plate just 2 weeks ago...
mine was brand new tho...about 2-4 weeks old.. i just wanted to change it cuz liquid silver faceplate looks sexy lol
u might wanna get buttons along with ur new faceplate cuz the stock psp buttons don't fit very well with asterix faceplate
as for the installations...
just remove the screws on the back ...(i believe one on the bottom, two on the back..and 2 more underneath ur battery)
and then ur faceplate should come off ...use dust-off or something to get rid of dust before installing ur new faceplate.. it's really easy..u don't have to deal with any wires =D

Own... PSP FW: 2.6
