I'm not very computer savvy so please answer carefully. I just downloaded DVD shrink. Can I use it to copy a DVD to a CD? Because my computer only has a CD burner. If it does, what do I do differently then if I were to burn it to a DVD??

no you cant, shrink is a reauthor program and needs to utlise a burning engine like Nero to complete the task.
I suggest that you buy a dvd burner (about $60 australian). Its near impossible to get a dvd to your hard drive without a dvd rom of some sort as a cd writer cant read the dvd disc

A DVD holds 4.7 Gigs of data, a CD holds 750 megs, very hard to shrink the data down to such a small size and have it play well, recommend buying a good DVD burner for about $40 or so, you'll still be able to burn CDs as well as DVDs

I usually only download a 5 minute segment of the DVD at any one time so maybe I don't need too much space.

I should explain more. I already have a program called ROXIO that burns on to CDs. Can I use Shrink to copy a 5 minute segment of a DVD to my harddrive than use Roxio to copy on to a CD?

you say you download, well thats a different kettle of fish then. You can convert your downloaded file to mpeg1 which in essence is a vcd format and that can be burnt to disc with a cd burner.
If your avi is 700meg, when you convert it , it will probably blow out to 1.5 gig.
As you only have 700meg on a cd you will need to use 3 cds, and your 1.5 gig is spread righ across it.
Not the best way to view a movie, but it is doable and watchable.Only thing menus arent active and thats a pain in the neck

unless you have a dvd rom/burner your dvd disc wont be read in a cd drive

I'm sorry but I'm such a jerk. I didn't mean to say "download". I meant I want to copy only a 5 minute segment of a DVD with Shrink and then burn it to a CD with Roxio.

Yes you can make SVCD and VCD disks with Roxio, I haven't used it since finging out about Nero, they will play on most DVD standalone players as well as any computer with a CD player. I'm sure if you search the AD forums someone has covered that topic better than I can explain it. Good luck. With only a 5 minute video though you don't need to shrink it.

if you want to make a VCD from a dvd you need a dvd rom drive to do that, a cd rom will not read a dvd

End of problem, get a decent burner for not a lot of money and you'll be happy. I did a real quick search of their daily specials at Newegg. com and found this for you. I'm sure if you look a little more you can find one you like more, or perhaps read thru the forums and get the members suggestions. Personnally I own a Sony DRU-510A and a Sony DRU-800A drive and love them both. BTW the 800A is a rebadged Lite-on drive with similar properties as the one I showed you.
I hope that this helps.
edited to add another Lite-on drive.
Here is another one

the only other solution is to use some one elses machine that does have a dvd rom init.Edit on your mates pc, transfer the file portion to a flashcard then to your pc.Then re edit it to mpeg1, then burn it using your cd burner. As you can see this is still a lot of mucking around

I guess I'm going to buy a DVD burner because I'm too computer-stupid to do any fancy stuff. I just hope I'll eventually figure it out when I do get the burner.
