Connecting Xbox to Surround sound

Ok, so Ive got my 5.1ch surround sounds speaker with built in amplifier and I want to connect my xbox up to it.
I know that I need an advanced AV pack and optical output cable, but where do they all go? I know that the advanced AV pack first goes into the xbox, then from there Im lost. Does the optical output cable just go into the normal audio white hole. If so, what connects the yellow video one to the TV?

it all depends on the receiver you have. Soe will have more options for hooking things up then others.
Some have optical inputs, and some only have optical outputs.
If you want you can just take the stock composite cabes and hook the video to the TV and audio to the surrond sound. The sound quality will be just fine and you do not have anything to buy.
If you have the hook ups and want to go very high tech them you get a set of component cables that have the optical out port, buy and optical cable. then hook the component video and optical audio throuh the surround sound system. But i would only go high end if you have a high end TV, if not your wasting your time with the component cables as the picture will be a little better but not much. On a high end TV it makes a difference.
But to be honest, for the audio i would just hook the red & White analog audio cables that come with your Xbox to the receiver and be done with it. The sound will be plenty good enough. If you don't like it THEN you can go out and spend money on the digital audio.

hummm... interesting post.....is there a significant picture quility improvement?? ive just bought a new HDTV and the xbox looks a little 'Grainy'
have you any links where to get these cables??

with an HDTV it will be worth the upgrade to component cables
a high end TV needs high end cables, Now that you have HDTV you should have all your components that can use component cables using them. Like an Xbox, PS2, DVD Player and so on.
You can get them at most electronics stores

if you have a lot of components that can use these cables and limited inputs on the TV then you can get a component video switcher like i bout from the same company who makes those cables. Best Buy has them but not on their website.
It has 4 inputs and 1 output so you can switch between 4 different components (Xbox, PS2, DVD, and so on) and only use one input on the TV. All the audio runs from there as well.
Note in case you are not aware. Component cables are video only, the Xbox cable above has both the 3 video and 2 audio cables needed.
But if you buy them for other components like a DVD player they will usually just have the video, you could use the stock audio cables that the DVD player came with.

Ok, so I want to connect the original xbox cables into the amp on the back of my subwoofer.
Theres a problem. Since the xbox cables have to reach the TV inputs and the subwoofer inputs, they are too short. Theres only one way I could fix this and it is to move the xbox onto the floor and put the subwoofer where the xbox currently is-

Will it be bad for the subwoofer to be horizontal, because thats the only way it will fit and still let the cords reach both the tv and amp.

ok, but where do i connect those to my tv??? i have two scart inputs, a dvi connection and Svhs3 connection on the side of my tele??

why not just stand the Xbox verticle and the PS2 verticle side by side? I know many people including myself whoc have saved space that way. Do you have a reciever that the sub woofer plugs into?
That is where the audio for the game systems should run anyway.
sarahn11, if your TV has component inputs on them it will look like these. The green, Blue, & Red one's that say component in. Those would be for your picture. The audio could either plug in below them into the Red & White inputs directly below where the component cables hook, or go into your stereo receiver for surround sound.

Its ok, Ive got the system and everything worked out. I connected the reciever to the TV so anything that plays through the TV (xbox, dvd etc) is in surround sound.

You have an HDTV with no component inputs?
That is odd. HDTV is high end and should have those.
i do not think i have seen one lately that doesn't at least have one.
either on the back or on one of the sides.
Without that or HDMI you have an HDTV that can never get the best picture quality that an HDTV should be able to get.
