First of all, sorry if I posted this in the wrong part of the forum.
Basically I've been backing up my dvd's now for about a year and a half I'd say.
I use verbatim and I used to just keep my back ups in blank dvd holders, meaning I'd no front for my backed up dvd's.
At the minute I've started to print out exact covers for my backed up dvd's. I've been using plain a4 paper but I have to keep cutting the top, bottom and sides of the printed out cover so it would fit exactly into the plastic thats on the dvd holder.
I looked around for the exact paper size but couldn't find it anywhere.
Finally today I found a computer accessorie shop that said they would cut the paper to the exact size for me.
I thought great, but now I'm thinking, in my printer settings, what settings should I put in? Like I said, I was using a4 and cutting it slightly so to fit, should there be exact settings in my printer to print the covers standard dvd size? I'm using hp 1317 all in one printer copier and scanner.
Thanks in advance.

sandisk- Well I use Regular full sized sheets of photo paper and just trim away the excess with a scissors . I suppose if you wanted to get fancy you could use a Roller or guillotine type paper cutter but that Could be a little dangerous with the Blade type cutters I mean! Using the scissors you really don't have too much waste/trimings but I guess whatever works right! good luck buddy !

what Guyrus was leading to is, in Nero there is a Covers and Labels program ... I find it in Nero Express:

here you can use the plain paper or choose from many, already templated cut out sheets that can be bought from stores. If you have Nero check out #3. #2 sets the template for INLAY where you can paste a picture of the DVD front and back covers to. Very easy program to use.

Thanks for the reply guys.
Basically I'm having no luck at all with this.
I bought 300 sheets of good quality paper today cut down to H 27.4 cm and W 18.5 cm. this paper fits exactly into my dvd cases.
So I open up my saved image on my desktop, select the image I want to print, hit preferences, the settings are A4 size by default, so I drop down through the different settings, NOT there. For some reason it won't let you manually change the size settings, it only allows you to use the 10 or so different settings it supplys in the drop down box!
So I opened the image in microsoft image writer instead of hp, it HAS manual settings. So I changed the settings to the ones I want, I thought fine. I saved the settings and hit print.
It prints the whole image fine right til the very end and then leaves a borded of about 1 cm and theres also about 1cm of the image missing. I just can't figure out why this border is here rather than the rest of my image. Is it just the hp printer I'm using? because I cant change the settings there?
Thanks

sandisk- I don't think it's just your Hp Printer , I get a similar effect with my epson all in one. The image is all there but there is that white border you mentioned . Basically I just cut it off when cutting triming my insert . I believe some of the epson printers have a borderless setting for making Photographs Mine does but must admit I have'nt tried it when making covers ! So if your HP has a setting for borderless prints perhaps you could try that out!

Hi thanks for the reply.
Sorry I've deleted all my images through frustration before I read your post guyrus, so I've none to show at the minute.
Basically the reason I don't want to just cut them after I've done the printing is because I have a pain doing it.
Throughout the years I've built up a lot of dvd's, and with work I just cant get the time to cut them all to the exact size, hence the reason I bought the precisely measured paper.
I've beem backing up now for quite a while, but only my new releases. But now I want to do my whole library.
With regards to Nero, yes I have Nero 6. I opened up Nero like you said IHoe and imported the cover, but I'm a total noob to making labels and covers with Nero and the size is worst than ever lol
I think I'll stick to just cutting it with the scissors for the time being until I find a printer that has the settings I require.
Thanks for the reply guys.
Oh yeah, I did try talking to a hp tech online, 2 of them actually, but when I got deep into the situation with them, twice I mysteriously got cut off!
Bout half hour later I got a mail say THEY had tech trouble themselves.
I'm sticking to using the scissors :(

Just on a quick note.
I had problems printing because the copiers would "feel" the edge of the paper and cutoff a centimeter of my cover. Then I started useing legal size paper with Undercover XP software. Now all my covers are printed perfectly in the middle of the page for easy cutting.

Just my two cents...

I use 8 1/2" x 11" glossy photo paper for my covers. My HP printer would cut off about 1/4" of the image, no matter what I did. It made me so mad, I couldn't stand it.
I got an Epsom R200 printer. It prints my whole cover, on an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of glossy photo paper. I trim off the white edges, and it fits perfectly. You may already know that the R200 also prints directly on printable cds and dvds........ :o)

I say deal with the aggravation of cutting the paper. That way you never have to worry about losing part of the image because of a screwed up border or margin. It's just part of the business of printing custom covers. I buy A3 (13" x 19") Epson Glossy Photo Paper and then take it to OfficeMax where they cut the whole stack down the middle, leaving me with a neat stack of 9.5 x 13 paper. The clean, professional cut costs all of one dollar. I have invested in a $25 paper cutter which does a great job of trimming after I print. I wouldn't do it any other way since I don't want to risk losing any of the image. Besides, what if you switch printers some day to one which can't print borderless in the first place? What are you going to do with all your exactly-sized paper?

i dont do covers generally but the ones you get from cdcovers when printed are always in the right format and size when printed.Maybe try those ones with your current software or download there cover xp program and use that as a substitute application instead

Hi, thanks for the reply's.
I'm convinced now it my printer that just keeps printing a border.
I tried the cover xp programme, very good little tool but I'm still having no luck.
I put in my measurements in mm H 274 and W 185 and once again the print out is fine right to the end when it leaves that border.
I did notice after I put mt measurements in cover xp programme, it has a printer properties box and that uses a4 size by default so I changed it to executive paper size but it still leaves that border.
It has to be my printer that leaves the border??

sandisk- I'm not familiar with Hp Printers Bought one & it was D.O,A right from the box ! but If it Lets you print 8"x11" photo's you should be able to do those borderless as well ? NO ? if not wait for a sale ! get a new printer The R-series epsons are nice as the other guys mentioned they let you print directly on your dvd/cd- inkjet printable ones !You may also want to think about a all in one - Printer /scanner/copier- Epson makes a nice one - Stylus CX-7800 -what I have and it prints very good ! also you can get cartridges for this model really cheap -GENERICS @ EZINKJETS.COM but wait for a sale the sales are usually 45% off with free shipping ! & if you get a epson printer you'll have to run the nozzle check/cleaner utility every once in a while to keep your jets/printhead clean! Even using genuine epson ink. Hope you solve your problem & good luck with your project!

I'd rather prefer getting my covers done guyrus to be quite honest, I am on the verge of getting an epson at the moment and then I'll do both cover and cd.
I did chat to a hp technichan today.
She said, you definitely can customise you paper settings no matter what size within reason.
She said, "open undercover xp, print setup, choose custom if your paper size is not there, then hit ok. Hit print on the main menue on undercover xp, another hp window appears, hit properties, and where custom1 is highlighted, just underneath there is a select button that say's customise, hit this and this should allow you to manual adjust your exact size". Problem with me is, there is no customise button under where I select custom1.
Hp's answer was, "it's a software issue, uninstall and then re-install.
I did just that, un-installed and then downloaded the software from the hp website and re-installed, still no joy.
Now it's really pis##ng me off because I know it can be done.
Is it the software, printer or the advance settings?

for me it was the ring in the centre of the disc that was annoying me(i couldnt get the ink to print the whole disc, it left a white ring 1 cm from the middle blank).I solved that by creating a new template and changing the size so the whole was the smallest. That was done with in the software, so i'm assuming your problems are software based rather than hard ware

Probably, I talked to a friend of mine today thats in the know when it comes to printing dvd covers and cd's.
He told me to customise it exact size in my printer options which is HP, and in undercover xp, make it slightly smaller both W and H. He said you'll still have a white border about 1cm tops, sides and bottoms but the cover will be perfect. I want that, but the border it's leaving is leaving out part of my cover. There's an answer somewhere to this.

Been the HP route and what I do is lightly attach a scrap sheet to the 'printable' sheet to make it slightly longer and tell the printer to use 'legal' (or metric equivalent)in the setup.
UndercoverXP will then print out the cover exactly on the 'printable' 8x11 (or metric equivalent) sheet, it just assumes your using the larger size.
Canon printers don't have this problem.

@attar
Yeah I actually stumbled on this once when my printer took 3 or 4 pages at a time and the printer was tricked thinking there was more room at the end of the sheet.

But still I just use legal size paper because my work has a nice supply I can "borrow"......

Attar, how can you tell how much to add on, does it take up much time? I was on to the hp website again, I talked to about 6 techies and the last one told me your 1317 all in one just doesn't support your paper size!! I said "that's a little strange when there are 3 custom boxes and also the 1317 diagram on your website that shows you what exactly to do, only thing is there is a selection box missing in my options menue, is my 1317 different to everyone elses"?

That is odd, because the HP site

http://tinyurl.com/mhs95

shows letter and legal (216x280 and 216x356) as choices on that model.

I overlap my 'letter' 3 inches and tell the printer to use 'legal'.
It doesn't take any time except to add some sticky tape on the side that isn't being printed, it even peels off so you can reuse the sacrificial sheet again..or as 'fatstrat' says,'borrow' some legal size.
