It seems like a nice product...

What Operating System are you running first of all? If you are running XP, you should be able to hear over your speakers the USB detect sound "duh-dah". If not, we would need to test if your USB ports are even working.

If you have any peripherals that use USB, and they are working, then of course your USB ports are not the problem.

What you can try doing after that is makeing sure that your hard drives are set as "Master" and verify that all the connections (power to converter and to HDD and the IDE USB Device) are all connected properly. Plug in your HDD to your PC and see if your PC gives you a pop-up bubble message like, "new hardware is detected and ready to use" or something.

If not, you would then need to go into your device manager. Depending if you "My Computer" icon is in your start menu or desktop, right click on it and go to properties. Click on the hardware tab and click on the first button there that says "device manager"

In the device manager, expand the "disk drives" tree and see if your hard drive is listed. If not, right click on one of the hard drives listed and click "scan for hardware changes."

If your computer doesn't detect anything, we need to try something else. If you don't have Windows XP, we'll need to go about a different method too.

About the usb 2.0 and you not having usb 2.0... That doesn't really matter. All USB 2.0 devices are backwards compatable. The only difference is that it will run slow as hell. No kidding either. Once we get this working, you might want to consider getting a USB 2.0 PCI controller for your PC. You will not regret it. We'll talk about that later though.

Let me know what's up.

The hard drive not being formatted should not matter... Hardware is hardware and it should detect it whether or not it's formatted.
