I just backed up and burned 5 out of 6 of the discs for Freaks and Geeks Season One with relatively few hitches--once or twice I had the error message:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Failed to read file "E:\"
The request could not be performed because of an I/O Device Error.

But I just cancelled the operation and restarted it, and then everything was fine again.

Then while analyzing disc 5, DVD Shrink stopped at 23% and gave me the same error message. I cancelled the operation, but the app. froze, so I used the task manager to end the task. Then when I re-opened DVD Shrink and tried to analyze it, it began the analysis from 23% and froze again. This happened in spite of system restarts and the successful analysis of another DVD.

Is there an easy way to just clear DVD Shrink's memory cache? And if this I/O error message shows up only sporadically, is it more likely a problem with DVD Shrink or a problem with my computer/DVD drive?

Hi.unsticky,

Your I/O error is most likely due to the use of a poor grade media.
Either from the disc you're reading from or the disc you're writing too.

If you're reading from a disc, try cleaning it OR exchanging it for another.

If you?re writing to a DVD, use a decent grade media. Using crap such as Memorex will give you this message fairly consistently. Good quality isn't expensive, poor quality will provide you with a good stock of coasters and an endless supply of unreadable storage DVD's as they tend to degrade rapidly, leaving you with a backup that won't play. Now THAT is costly.

* Cheap media freezes, skips, pixelats and may refuse to be recognized by both burners and players :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" many times you'll get a "Cyclic Redundancy error" (CRC error) or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won't accept your "cheap" media :-(
Another problem which, "Pops up" is a "*Power Calibration Error". This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, "Yep, you guessed it", inexpensive media. *A "Power Calibration Error" can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn't usually the case.

We need to use a consistently Hi-quality DVD media for our backups. Burning DVD video's isn't at all like burning CD's where almost any disc's are fine to use. Likewise, it's not like burning text files, photos, or even music to DVD's which can be burned at a high speed on almost any disc. Burning DVD video requires a consistently Hi-quality dye application over a good composite disc and believe it or not, not that many media meet those requirements. The following media meets our criteria for a good DVD video discs and they are;! Phillips, Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData G03's, Maxell +R and Fuji +R's BUT not the -R's as they cannot be trusted, Ritek G04 and G05's ( BUT not the 01's or the 02's), Verbatim DataLife, Verbatim DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO", this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc. Other discs such as Memorex, "Great AZO", and Princo are, in a word, crap. As a general rule, the vast majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi and RICOH are good bets.Only those Ritek named above are to be trusted the rest should be avoided. Look closely at those discs we recommended, you will see some dye types not listed by us. Those are poor risks even though the same company makes them. Prices online from SuperMediaStore.com, Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .36 (USD) a disc - and just recently, a "Super Sale" had 100 Taiyo Yuden discs, 4X for $.25 ea.(USD). An added PLUS, the above online stores all have an excellent return policy. As a passing note, when buying Verbatim's anywhere, they come with a lifetime warrantee. Return any bad discs with your online sales slip OR retail register receipt and a new one will be shipped to replace it.

For the best online media stores to shop, try -

Mertline.com

Newegg.com

And,

Supermediastore.com

Shopping around can prove worthwhile - Staples, as of this date, offered HP +R DVD's (I LQQked them up in MediaMatch and they are made by Mitsubishi) for $18.00 per 50. Verbatim's were on sale $10.00 rebate for a pack of 25, $20.00 (USD) for a pack of 50 AND Taiyo Yuden where on sale with their -R, 4X DVD's for $.25 each (USD) in packs of 100, a fortnight past - Think of it, Taiyo Yuden's for $25 ea. There are sales all the time for the "GREAT" stuff - So you sea, quality isn't always expensive ~

Let us know how you do ~

Cheers,

Pete
