I know this seems odd thread but,I recently moved into a new apartment on january 16 and my electric bill the first month was $90.00, 5 months later my bill hit $400.00.When I first moved in the air conditioning in the apartment was great now it stays on all day just to reach 80F. I recently told the landlord(owners)and they sent over some guy to look at it,he tells me its the coils that need to be cleaned and that they won't be able to clean them for another 2 weeks,so now i'm in the dilema of what to do? should I wait it out and probably pay another high electric bill or complain somemore what would you all do?

Turn off the A/C first. If it costs that much to make the apartment 80 degrees, you could do the same thing with fans, and it would be cheaper. I'd go buy some box fans, a couple rotating fans, and setup shop until the air conditioner gets fixed.

I know what it's like to get a $400 electric bill brother. For me it was the winter, electric heat was on, multiple people taking 20 minute showers daily with an electric water heater.... didn't happen twice.

I had a large 1-bedroom for a year. It had natural gas, and you didn't have to pay extra for the gas you used. The electric bills were about $45-60/mo.

I'm going to go talk to the owners tomorrow morning to see if I can reduce the rent payment for that month at least $200 dollars off since they already knew about the problem

I have been in the AC business for over 30 years. I think the service guy is feeding you a line of BS. Although somewhat possible that the coils could block up in 5 months, I doubt it if the filters were in place. More than likely the system leaked out all the freon and now runs all the time. Adding freon will get you going for a short time but the leak needs to be found and repaired. Just a guess from my view of the problem. Its usually cheaper to dump freon into the system once a year than to fix it properly. If the leak is slow enough it will last through the hot weather. Same applies to automotive ac units.

thanks for your advice jerry, they cleaned the coils on saturday,it had sludge all over it,right now its nice and cool inside my apartment but,I work all day and by the time I get home its already after the sun goes down.I am going to talk to the owner tomorrow about the light bill hopefully I can get atleast half of the bill taken care of.

p.s just something I found funny, the landlord left a letter on my door that said because of failure to pay my rent I needed to vacate the apartment then I saw that it was for the apartment next to me,funny thing is they moved out 3 weeks ago and never told anyone at the main office,so they think its still being used

Sludge on the coils?? How did that get there?? Oh well, glad that worked for you. Got to stay cool. I've seen blocked coils after several YEARS of use but like I said before it was possible in a few months. Just not very common.

Make your own air conditioner
June 21, 2006 4:00 AM PDT

Lifehacker, one of our favorite geek blogs, is as timely as it is practical. As we officially enter summer this week, for example, it offers a very handy post for warm weather: How to make your own air conditioner.
