I just downloaded SHRINK. Before I invest any more on this project I want to know:
a) after I burn to a DVD will it play on a standard DVD Player like regular?
b) Will I be able to use the regular features of my DVD Player/Recorder, such as deleting any segment I want?
c) Is this true even if the original DVD was copy-protected?
I would appreciate if someone would tell me.

To answer your questions; Yes, after you burn a backup copy of a DVD processed with DVD Shrink, it should play in your standalone DVD player as it remains in standard DVD video format. However, it is recommended, if your burner allows it, to booktype DVD+R to DVD-ROM for optimal compatibility as some standalones may not read DVD recordables. If your burner does not booktype, you should try DVD-R. Disc quality is also a factor when it comes to playability in standalones. Always burn at a reasonable speed (half the disc max speed) on good quality blank media. Use Verbatim, Sony or Taiyo Yudens made in Japan.
Most likely, if the original is a commercially pressed DVD movie, it will be encrypted with at least CSS. In fact, the only DVD I've ever come accross that was not copy protected. was region 1 release of 1984.
As an added note, DVD Shrink may be able to handle older copy protections and CSS (Content Scrambling) alone, but know that Shrink will not be enough to break newer encrytions including the now common Sony Arccoss.
Overall. Your backups should work just the way the originals do if they are done right.

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

I'm disappointed because the whole reason I downloaded SHRINK was for copy protected DVDs, and now you tell me it won't work on most new DVDs. Is there a software out there that does work on all?

Yes, there are rippers that will work. If you want to go the free route, you can download DVD Fab Decrypter and VOB Blanker. If you do not mind paying for a decryption and ripping program, you can purchase and download AnyDVD and DVD Clone. Shrink is still a very good program that most of us on this site us, it just is no longer updated and can not decrypt the newer encryptions. Do not worry, there is always a way to back-up a movie. :-)

I would also recommend AnyDVD. It's simply the best. I also use DVD Shrink a lot mostly because it is a very reliable one click program to backup DVD's on DVD5 discs. All you need to do to is run AnyDVD in the background and use Shrink normally. The movies will then show up as "not encrypted".

I'm trying not to pay for this software because I realize already that I have to buy a DVD burner and now I don't want to also pay for a ripper since I don't even know if I'll get it to work in the end. I went to that VOB site someone mentioned but it says the software is no longer available. Can someone give me a current address where to unload a free version of a DVD ripper that works on the latest encrypted DVDs?

I went to that DVDIdle address and it says this page has been moved
I went to the VOB site and I don't know which one of those 6 choices I'm supposed to download. Do I sound too stupid for VOB because my ignorance when it comes to computers is amazing!

The site for DVD Fab opens right up for me. Try manually typing in the address: www.DVDIdle.com/free.htm
As for the VOB site, I would click on the 1st executable file and save the file to your hard drive.

I've successfully found the DVDIdle page to download DVD FAB Decrypter. Now can you tell me how many steps do I need to copy a copy-protected disk and burn to a DVD.
a) Is it enough with DVD FAB Decrypter and Roxio (which I already own)? Or do I also need DVD Shrink? Do I also need VOB? Do I also need Nero?

Some movies you will be able to use just DVD Fab. But VOB will help with most of the movies. After ripping the movie to your HDD, you then run the files through VOB to create a new VOB file. VOB Blanker will get rid of blank and dead cells that are used to prevent copying. So, personnelly, I think you do need VOB but will not need it for all movies. As for Roxio, I am not sure. I use Nero. But yes you will most likely need Shrink. Most movies are to long to fit on a standard blank DVD. Shrink will compress the movies. If you use blank Dual Layer DVDs, then no you most likely will not need DVD Shrink.
ArnieBear provided a great link to use. This link will help you copy most movies. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20DVDFABDecrypter,S...
Good luck!

if you are going to use roxio/nero.Only put one on your system, not both. Those 2 applications are great as long as they dont exist on the same system at the same time otherwise you are letting your self in for a lot of conflict issues.
Roxio likes to conflict with everything, but by itself it does work reasonably well.Nero on the other hand co exists peacefully with most software.

Just checked my shoutbox hersheya, looks like the regulars answered all of your questions before I could. Don't hesitate to post out in the open, you'll get faster results than to put a request in a shoutbox, more people see the open post, and secondly, other people may have the same question that you do as well, and they'll get their answer faster.
