There is a way using a launcher that boots to your browser. Although I've only done it with the Memory Card Exploit.
It works this way: You boot your Exploit with the original PSX game trigger. After the launcher is loaded and the disc stops spinning, you can then swap in your PSX backup, then in SMS choose to return to the PS2 Browser and then you should be in the Browser screen with the PS2 thinking the backup on the drive is actually an original PSX game. You can see the black disc there. Select it, and the PS2 boots the backup up as if it were original.
To get this working, you'd probably need to use the Independence Compiler 3.0 and select the boot from CD structure so that it doesn't try to install the exploit to your memory card. Make sure you put the SMS.ELF in before making the ISO file. After that's done, you can simply put in an original PSX game, wait until the drive stops spinning, put the backup in, load SMS (I believe you can also use the PS2Browser option in ULaunchELF to achieve the same thing, but I'll confirm this later tonight and let you know the results), select the Exit to PS2 Browser item, and then select the black disc in the browser and you should be running your backup flawlessly. :)
It takes a bit of work to do it from SwapMagic though. With the MC Exploit, it's a breeze to get it working.
