Hi, I've been having exactly the same problems. Also using PSP Video 9 as I heard it was meant to be ideal for most formats of video files.

I originally encoded a South Park episode in AVC format (the top profile in PSP Video 9 768kpbs video 16:9 etc) and put it on a 256mb memory stick. This plays with no problems on my PSP at all.

I then purchased a 2gb memory stick and encoded a DVD (first ripped to AVI and then converted using PSP Video 9). This played for a short time then came up with the error video cannot be played. I initially thought there was something up with the memory stick and when I copied a further file across, the memory stick showed the wrong amount of free space and when I tried to reformat it, it wouldn't work. I somehow brought it back to life and managed to get it formatted again with my PSP and it seems fine now (this may not be relevant). However, I then tried the South Park episode that I know works my other memory stick and the same error comes up.

The files are definately going in the right folder. Please help! It seems strange that the South Park episode will play with no problems on one memory stick and not the other. Should I try encoding with another piece of software, or could the problem lie with the memory stick? (I thought it could be the latter, but as I'm not the only one with this problem it makes it unlikely)
Cheers

oh dear...I don't like where this is going! Is it to do with bad sectors on the memory card?

Well obviously there is an element of risk when buying anything from ebay, especially when the price is very low. I bought a 2gb ms from some chinese guy on ebay for £30 a few months ago and it's still working fine although I have found out that it is almost certainly a fake, but others haven't been so lucky and have had really crap fakes. Some people have had 2gb sticks that only have a capacity of 1gb and others sticks haven't worked at all, it's just the luck of the draw.
If you want my advice, I would save and buy a 2gb from a reliable source, will probably save you loads in the long run cos you'll have to keep replacing the fakes.

Ok cheers, can't tell if its a fake or not - is very good if it is (packaging is in chinese). Do you think this would be why the videos don't play rather than any errors in encoding? I guess the fact that one works fine on another memory stick kinda answers that somewhat. I've found a stick from another source, twice the price I paid on Ebay but I expect more reliable! :

Yeah mine was in Chinese too, and yes, they do look really genuine. Not used that site before so don't know of their rep, but 2gb sticks are £55 on Amazon.

EDIT- And yes, I would imagine that is why the videos won't play.

Good luck with that mate, if a guy is selling knock off gear there's not much chance of him having a conscience and being willing to give you a refund!!!!

Yeah no, I realise. Just gonna try reporting to Ebay and Paypal if no joy etc. Worth a shot I guess. Also goes to show you can't rely on feedback as he's got 99.9% positive. Guess they've got lucky or given it before fully testing.

Well yeah, most people leave feedback as soon as they receive the item, without really testing it out.

In that case I would think fauly memory card. Mine is definately a fake, and as I have had videos working on my PSP with an original memory stick it must be the cause. Try the other memory sticks you've got, even if they are fakes maybe one will work. I'd think about taking your PSP to a Sony store as I have same firmware as you and problems are identical. Don't think its the encoding as you've tried different software and unlikely to be the PSP.
