I have a pre-modified v12 PS2 (slim) that's having some very weird problems.
This might be a laser problem but here's what's booting and what isn't.
*DVD movies (and DVDR movies) they all boot with no problems

*PS2 games (backups) boot up, but then they come do a halt after the PS2 logo which also transitions into my Matrix Infinity logo.
*PS2 Games (originals) Does the same thing as my back ups

PSone Games (Backups) From Power Off to ON It boots, but does not load stays at a black screen.
When I reset the system, the game then loads.

yea sounds like a laser issue, also for your backups use better quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatem, other brands generally wear your laser out quickly.

V12 arew known to have laser issues, so u might want to look into getting a fix.

Yeah, I am currently waiting for a replacement laser to be shipped to me. As for media I've been using TDK and Verbatim.

It's actually weird that I can't boot any DVD-ROM discs, but I can play my DVD movies (DVDRs and originals) without problems.

have you tried them in fast boot mode at all.
When you insert a game, turn on the PS2 and hold the select button and it should skip the main screen's all together and go right to the game. Not sure if it will work any better, just an idea.

also adjusting or cleaning the laser before yu replace it would be a good idea. If it has no problems reading movies then it most likely is not bad. It would have trouble ready anything if it was bad. And original games would be the most likely to load up.

and having a V12 i REALLY hope you had a laser fix installed when they installed the chip, if not you may as well order a third laser before you install the second one as you will probably need it.

also look into your chips boot modes, some have different boot modes for PS1 games & movies as they do for PS2 games. If that were the case then it would boot movies but not games until you chose the correct boot mode.
