All firmwares...If you are running a version 1.50 you must encode in MPEG4 SP, for versions 2.00 and higher you can encode in both SP and AVC, but i would recommend encoding in MPEG4 AVC.
There is now an app that allows 1.50 users to run AVC movies at full 480x272 resolution...lucky sods...;)

I believe it can vary between all the firmwares but there are only a few that require 2.7 so if your at 2.01 or above and want to play a new UMD movie that has been realesed, I recommend upgrading to 2.6 as you will still be able to run homebrew and latest UMD games but if you do decide to upgrade to 2.71 you will lose the option to play homebrew. If your firmware is 1.0 - 2.0 I would definently not recommend upgrading your firmware just to play a UMD movie as you will lose the option to play some of the vest homebrew around.

Oh sorry, you were talking about encoded movies to transfer to your PSP memory stick. If your convert your movie into the MP4 (mpeg4) you will be able to play (watch) it on all firmware but if you decide to convert your movies into AVC, you will need firmware 2.0 or above as AVC require s 2.0+ to play.

U can play AVC on a 1.50 http://jonny.leffe.dnsalias.com/pmp_mod_avc/index.htm have alook at this, and if you find its to brain mashing, i know of other apps u can use.
You have a 1.50 and i would suggest u encode at 480x272 res, because 1.50 is the only firmware u can play this res at.

I'm not quite sure why it doesnt work but you can use different converting programs to convert it into a suitable MP4 for the PSP to play. I personally find pspvideo 9 to be the best converting tool as it is all pretty straight forward. You can find pspvideo 9 here: http://www.pspvideo9.com/

PSPvideo9 is old and outdated, they are currently working on a new conversion software called Videora IC2, its currently in Alpha stage.
MeGUI in conjunction with BeHappy and Atom Changer convert near UMD quailty as it uses X264 where as PSPvideo9 uses FFMPEG.
