On-line catalogues listing TY DVD+R disks invariably have many
styles to choose from such as inkjet such and such or white front, purple back etc., are these styles only cosmetic or do they make reference to different qualities of TY DVD+R disks?
Thanks in advance for any help . . .

The inkjet and white full hub printables are the same disks except the top is suited for printers to print labels on them. There is no difference in the quality except if you see something called value line or premium line. If they say nothing they are most likely premium line. The value line is a little bit worse, a 95 score instead of a 98. But that is extremely good compared to other brands. Hope this helped.

not necessarily true, it's all dependent on your system/burner and appropriate firmware~ :) i can crank out CONSISTENT 97-98 scores on my VALUELINE TYs as frequently as i can with the premiumline, and SOMETIMES, the premiumline scores are lower... :)

depends from batch to batch, but other than that..the rest of your analysis is correct~ :)

He's right, I've bought the value line 4x and they all burned great. But this new batch of 8x premiums only play on certain dvd players, while others read as "no disc".

It's the player. On one Sony player, you can hear it reading the disc but at a second longer compared to Verbatims. On a portable insignia player (which sucks), it totally struggles to read Verbatims but plays TYs fine.

On my phillips player, it just plays everything! Including the one or two CMCs I have (but those were purchased like 3 years ago when I first started this).

I, too have not had any decline in quality with the value line vs premium line TY. The only difference that I've noticed is slightly older batch numbers on the value line discs...

I have never used the -R disks and always used Taiyo Yuden's +R, 8x media...... I know that the -Rs are cheaper and my drive will or should be able to play them but I have been getting so much success with booktyping my +Rs that I would wonder if the -Rs are worth it? I have been getting 99.80% quality scores on my +Rs ...... would it be worth while to switch to the -Rs? According to my burner and my players they all are able to play the -Rs .....maybe I should experiment and buy just a few and see! what do you guys think..... should I fool around with a proven thing and see if I can save money and buy the -Rs instead of the +Rs?

@IHoe

They TY -R are excellent with the burners that I own (see profile). The +R are marginally better, but not that much better for me to pass up the -R deals at sms.com. I just ordered 300 more inkjet printables Friday for $98.99 plus free shipping!!! I have had ZERO compatibility issues on various players.

@IHoe

it's never a bad thing to try the two different formats of DVD-R and the DVD+R, the quality on the Taiyo Yudens is consistent in BOTH formats~ :)

besides, to save a few bucks for the DVD-R, your wallet will thank you~ :) i'm a DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom guy MYSELF, but i do still use DVD-R TYs for my picky Toshiba standalones that ironically REFUSE to play my dvd-rom YUDEN000T02s/YUDEN000T03s/MCC003/MCC004 ..strange i know~ :)

anyways, not to hinder your success in burning DVD+R TYs, but your score of 99.80% quality score is NOT accurate because your drive does not support PIF scanning...however minute or large the discrepency MAY be, IF your drive supported PIF scanning, your quality scores will undoubtedly be lower once the PIF totals are factored in...i'm not trying to rain on your parade as you seem to have had great success with 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s (excellent choice of media btw), just wanted to point out that your Philips drive (rebadged Benq 1620 if i'm not mistaken) does not take into account the PIF errors because it does not support this feature when tallying up your quality score... :)

great choice of media you use, very good drive/burner you using, just lacking in the "scanning dept" to give you an ACCURATE score; i'm guessing IF it did support PIF scanning, you would STILL be in the mid to high 90s for quality~ :) hope you don't take this the wrong way, i wish you CONTINUED success in your TY burns...in either DVD-R OR DVD+R format, or both :)

I would never take your advise the wrong way. I don't know why my drive won't take PIF scanning but I won't go out and buy a new drive just for that feature. As long as the DVDs play in all the players I own and the drive keeps up the good work I will keep on burning with it. In the future, and when my drive finally deteriorates to the point that needs replacement, then I'll buy a lightscribe Benque that does support the PIF scanning and get more accurate reading on my scans. but untill then...........

I have to get more Taiyo Yuden disks and I guess it's time to try out the -Rs and see for myself. I need a new case anyways sooooooo off to supermediastore.com I go!

most definitely! as long as it works and works well (burning wise) no need to get a new burner, the drive you have now is a Benq, even with 1000+ burns, still got a LOT of life left (i've easily put 2,000+ burns on my old Benq 1640, still going strong...only a few hundred on my new 1650...breaking her in slowly~) :)

i didn't want to seem like i was "burstin your bubble" in the slightest/least bit, that was not my intention...just pointing out a FACT in terms of the whole "quality scanning" thing... :)

may you have continued fantastic success w/ your drive and your NEW TYs...good luck, not like you will need it~ :)

Ihoe, I notice that you have a Dell G4 XPS 400 Extreme Edition.
Is that the same as Dell XPS 400?
I am thinking of getting a new Dell XPS 400 with about the same options as yours except for the 48x CD-RW Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW
Also the Pentium® D Processor 940. How do you like yours?
I copy mostly movies and work in Photoshop. I use the Ty media now and my success rate is about 99%.

all I can say is ...... I love my machine and it's working like it is new and I get 100%! quality scores of 99.80% but my Philips 8631 doesn't take into account PIF errors.... soooo the score, according to Mort, maybe a little lower:

actually Mort told me about a month ago....... and you confirmed it. I don't care but I do feel cheated with the burner that does a scan with DVDInfo Pro and can't really rely on the quality score becase the PIF errors are not recorded because of the drive. So that makes scanning my disks inaccurate. Oh well..... but every thing else works great! At least I'm thankful for that!

if ANYONE would beat me to the punch, it's def. Mort81~ i give him ALL the credit as he was THE ONE who introduced me to DVD+R and booktyping when i first started out~ :) (i had been using DVD-R format for YEARS before he "opened my eyes" to the joys of DVD+R and bitsetting)

i have not looked back since for MY OWN backups, i will only use DVD+R booktyped dvd-rom; for my family and friends, i will use DVD-R format if they own a Toshiba standalone that i find "picky" w/ media~ :)

anyways, before i go off on a 2 page rant, just wanted to let ya know that even MY humble beginnings with DVD+R format, began with Mort81 taking the time to help me out and teach me how to bitset~ :)

once again, teacher-student friendship that has grown leaps and bounds since the first day...we still keep in touch, learn from each other in many diff. fields from computer hardware, media, home theater, electronics, and anything else interesting under the sun hehehe...and i am grateful for his opinions and knowledge that he has shared with me :)
