ok, well to start off do you have a dvd burner?
Do you have Nero(or any other burining software like Roxio)?
If you answered yes to both of the above questions than you can burn dvds.
Do you want to burn the dvds as data, so you can watch on AVI dvd player or play on your computer? If so just burn as a "data" dvd.
If you want to burn to DvD-Compiant material, then youll have to convert to that format. Nero can do it for you or there are guides on this site.

Well since its for backup im gonna guess you just want to burn the avis to dvd. (if not heres the guide gwendolin suggested http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272946 )

unfochunatley, youre not going to be able to burn without software, sorry. You can get some free software like this http://www.download.com/BurnRight-CD-DVD/3000-2646_4-10374702.html it says it can burn data dvds, but ive never used it so give it a shot.
There are many guides out there, but mostly for programs like nero, and such, but since burning data on a cd/dvd is so simple, i dont think there is many guides out there.

Ok
and just to answer your question
Quote: so you are basically saying that it's simple to burn AVI file to dvdv+r. must be my lucky day.
It is if you arent going to try to play it in a standalone dvd player, if you just want it there as backup as an AVI that wont play in a regular dvd player, yes it is very easy!
You can also convert it so it can play in a regualr dvd player using Nero, try this guide
