hi guys.
I've a dvd writer. used to work 100%, but recently started giving errors (cyclic redundancy error\check).

What does this mean?

can it be fixed (without a shop)?, or should i just buy a new one?

Are you having CRC errors in reading/writing stages, one or both? Have you updated the firmware on your burner?

Check and make sure your drives are in DMA mode and have not slipped into PIO, here is a guide that shows you what to do and to correct the problem.

Check the current fw on your burner to make sure it is the latest, you can go to the BenQ site, or here

well, i've gone thru the steps illustrated to check if my drives are in DMA mode...went thru the whole procedure anyway...problem still persists...
When you load a disk (any disk), the green light on the device flashes, but then goes off...
What are my options?

How old is the burner anyway, burners are cheap nowadays it is hardly worth the effort sometimes to fix it. Sounds as though it has problems. What is the make and model of the burner and the current firmware, have you updated it recently?

Here is you burner and the current fw listed, check and see what you have on yours. If it is out of date you can try flashing the drive and see if this will help.

If you have Nero, then use the Nero Info Tool and it will tell you what your current fw is.

Pretty old, it is about 5 updates back you need the B7W9. Download the file and flash the drive, see if this corrects the problem.

Firmware is to update your burner about newer media and burn speeds, and sometimes can make changes to the drive in regards to that media. You did do a reboot after the flash. Make sure your DMA is on, and that your IDE cables to the drive are in good condition and seated tightly.
