I can't believe I'm making a post like this.

First off, I've been here for a while and, yes, I already searched (besides, I'm always on the Shrink forum), so all the obvious answers and solutions have not worked thus far.

Secondly, my system is a Presario Pentium 4, 1.50 gigs of RAM, 400 gig HDD, liteon burners 1673 and 1635. All of the firmware is up to date.

So the problem is obvious: Shrink is running insanely slow. On average, a heavily compressed title (say 55-59%) would take about 45-55 minutes to encode (after about 10-12 minutes to deep analyze). Now, however, it's taking, sometimes over 2 hours(!).

Decryptor still runs/burns like it should (at 8x it takes ~7-8 minutes--which is normal).

Yeah, the immediate responses are PIO/DMA, defragment, malware, firmware, cleansing, etc. I've done all that.

I was considering uninstalling Shrink just as a "reset."

Any ideas, suggestions?

have you tried replacing the IDE cables (whether u currently use regular flat or the round cables) for your system?

after a lot of rips/burns on my drives, say 1000+ or more, i tend to replace my round cables just for the sake of keeping my speed consistent...whether or not they "went bad" or not, it doesn't matter to me, i just like to have the confidence that my speeds are always consistent (like an oil change for your car after x amount of miles, rejuvenation is how i look at it) :) they are very inexpensive, only a few U.S. dollars and since you already know all about the PIO/DMA, defrag, etc. stuff which i won't allude to due to the thread title, this MIGHT be a good time to replace the IDE cable~ :) (this is a much cheaper alternative than flat out replacing your drives, if you suspect your drives might be going south of course...which i doubt, because i STILL use my old Liteon SOHW-1633S and 1693S to this day with no hardware issues i am aware of)

uninstalling and reinstalling DVD Shrink "fresh" might help too, i've done something similar with clonedvd2 earlier this week, seems to have done SOMETHING positive by doing so (even if it is ONLY IN MY HEAD) :)

good luck

Yeah..........uninstalling and reinstalling Shrink, is worth a try.
Might also want to try a Restore Point, to a day before it started messing up.

You probably already have AnyDVD, but do you have CloneDVD? If not, try that......... I know that you know pretty well, what you're doing, so I don't know what else to suggest.
Good luck!

Seems like I had a similar problem a while back. I thought it was maleware or something akin so I download CCleaner(Crap cleaner)and it found stuff spy bot and ad aware weren't removing. It sped my whole system up. Free and easy to try. Good program if it doesn't solve problem.

Gracias to everyone for the suggestions.

Replacing the cables is a good idea. I do that sort of thing on my car. Even though it's not required to be done so often, I always do things like that (spark plugs, filters, oil changes, etc. Then again, I have an american car so maybe it is necessary lol).

Good idea too about CloneDVD. I do have it (I have many alternatives to get the job done :)). I'll try it out today or tomorrow to see if that lags too. If so, then it's probably the drive(s). If not, then it's Shrink. Then, I'll try to reinstall Shrink as a reset.

Also, I do run the CCleaner on my laptop but not on my desktop (just never downloaded it onto it). I'll try that out, too. Thanks!

I should be picking up a couple of titles today anyway (Syriana and Married...With Children: Season 5). I'll probably not be able to back 'em up until tomorrow though.

I'll keep ya posted. Thanks again.

What cpu exactly do you have? Alot of the last P4s would throttle back when the temp gets high. Shrink should be maxing out your cpu so this could be happening.

Try blasting the heatsink with air to clean the dust out. And consider a better one...

The exact model name and number: Compaq Presario 1151NX (its official release year was '04), Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ, 1.49 GB RAM, 410 GB HDD.

I know before we started using the AC in this house, the fan in the PC would turn on while Shrink is encoding. I'm assuming it's the heatsink since it's much, much louder than you'd imagine a fan to be.

That is a very good suggestion. I'm probably gonna do that. I just need to figure out which one to get now/how to choose.

The Zalman 9500 is nice, though maybe overkill. Also Arctic Cooling Freezer for intel is good, and fairly small.

And to verify your temps install a program like Speedfan and see what your cpu is actually running under load, like during encoding. Post the temp I'm curious what you find.

Just to prove I'm not going insane, I used DVD-RB the other night and it actually took longer than usual. Before the upgrade in memory and this realization that Shrink is running longer than it normally does, the entire process in DVD-RB would take about 240 minutes.

The other night, it took 300 minutes (!). That's nuts.

Since then, for that reason (and because it was a bargain), I picked up another 1 gig memory stick. So at this moment, the total memory on my comp is now 2.49 gigs.

This has actually helped. I did the Sound of Music today, just as a test, and Shrink did run *almost* like normal. I think the encoding process was a hair over an hour. But if the normal time, back then, before the memory upgrade, was ~60 minutes, with this massive increase in memory, the encoding time should be much less--which it isn't.

I'm definitely gonna look into the fan now. Also, Doc, if you're reading this, or anyone else that would know, is there a specific type of IDE cable I'm looking for (one that would be distinguished in the user manual of the drives I bought) or would any do?

@ augerpro:

Here're the numbers:

While running VOBB (to rip):

CPU- 47c
Ambient- 39c
Remote- 0c
HD0- 43c
HD1- 48c

While running Shrink during the analyze stage:

CPU- 66c
Ambient- 41
Remote- 0
HD0- 41
HD1- 48

During the encoding process, the second number is the measurement at the halfway point:

CPU- 66/62
Ambient- 42/42
Remote- 0/0
HD0- 41/41
HD1- 48/48

Are you running 3 sticks of memory? Don't do that, it will be much slower as it has to run in single channel mode. Run 2 identical sticks so it will run in dual channel. Preferably 2x1gb or 2x512mb sticks of the same model. Then verify in the BIOS that you running dual channel. You're kinda taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back here...

You've got to be kidding? I guess you didn't read the first post.

And the comp is definitely set to dual channel. The comp originally came with two separate sticks (and I also checked when I put the new ones in).

Still no dice. I uninstalled and reinstalled Shrink. That didn't do jack lol.

I just backed up season 5 disc 3 of Married...with Children and the encoding process took like an hour and 40 minutes. That's totally unacceptable.

The IDE cables may be up next.

Somethings wrong?.....maybe you've got a virus? Sounds like your systems approaching crash? You might need some professional help. I would stop backing-up disc until this trouble has been remedied. Once it's fixed keep that PC offline i.e. "No Internet" I say this for many reasons.:P

I've had a similier problem with the computer running very slow, did the ususal virus/spyware checks, defrag, checkdisk etc...
It was the hard drive itself causing the slow down, it was starting to die as I can hear a very faint whining noise. Replaced the HD and everythings back to normal speed!

Yeah my computer doesn't have any viruses. I check every other day. Also, if you're implying that I should keep the PC offline while doing this--I already do. Almost nothing is running when I back up discs.

As for the other suggestion (about a new HDD), it's not a bad idea. I did just purchase a new drive so maybe I can switch it up. But like I said, at first, I'm gonna try the simple replacements: fans and cables.

After that, then we'll go deep.

Update:

I replaced the IDE cable (with a niftier single cord [with all the wires wrapped in it, obviously]) and it seems to have helped.

The ETA for the encoding of a 60% movie was ~40 minutes.

I'll see what happens later in the week.
