Region-free is what you're looking for. Most ripping programs and decrypting programs make the disks region-free as a result. If you have your own family movies on DVD, they are likely region-free anyway. The only problem would be making sure the broadcast formats are the same, in your case, PAL, I would guess. The media is the same in all zones. It's only the RPC II code embedded in commercial releases that differs among zones.

If the disks containing the family videos are region-free, it doesn't matter what the region code of the burner is set to when copying or burning or reading. Any burner with any region code will play a region-free. Region protection only comes into play when a disk has the RPC II protection embedded. If the family video does have RPC II protection, using DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink when copying will remove it and make it region-free.

If you load the DVD and fire up DVD Decrypter, it'll tell you if there is RPC II protection or if it's region-free. It'll be region free if all regions are listed/displayed.

DVD Decrypter is one of the easier ways to make copies as well. What programs were you thinking of using to make your copy?
