I'm planning to get a new dvd recorder, which i intend to use mostly for backup of my old vhs tapes.

In my area I found these two models which suit my budget.

1. Sony rdr-gx220 (just a dvd recorder, no hard disk or anything)
2. LG RC-7300 (dvd recorder + vcr combi)
Both have double layer support, DivX playback and other things that I need.

Now which one to get?

My dillemas are the following:

I like sony products, but If I get this particular sony model, I will have to use it in combination with my old vcr, which is working fine but it has composite outputs only (no scart, no s-video..), so I don't know what results to expect about the picture quality.

I suppose that dvd-r/vcr combies (like the LG mentioned above) have better connection between their dvd and vcr devices inside them.
I mean I just suppose they r connected in a much better way internally at the factory than a connection with an ordinary composite cable would be, right?
This is just a presumtion, I would really appreciatte ur info.

Also I would really appreciate if someone can post own experiences with these units.
I googled a lot for reviews, but like always i found many 'scary' stories like units with malfunction, disapointed buyers etc..I really dunno what to do.

Another info that would be useful is do these units support both PAL and NTSC for:
- DVD
-Divx
- vhs
playback (I suppose it doesnt matter anymore, most of the recent units r multisystem, but i need to be sure)

I have checked their specs, also I downloaded the manuals. Still many of my questions remained unanswered.
Just an example: the manual for LG's 7300 says it supports DivX but max. up to 720X576 (does this mean that videos in higher resolution will be unplayable?)
This same thing is not mentioned in the Sony manual, so, for example does that mean that lets say 768X576 file wil be playable??)

Still, i think there's no better way than to hear opinions and experiences straight from the users of these units.

Thank you very much in advance.

I'm not familiar with this model, however I looked at spec's, I am in =USA=
I would go with the LG over the Sony you will definetly get better results with internal connections.

Don't worry about the 720x576...
