More than likely, your problem is that the particular movie you are trying to rip contains a newer protection scheme that neither Shrink or Decrypter can handle alone. They both haven't been updated in a while so this problem is becoming more and more common.

There are other free programs out there that will take care of those new protections. The best known of which is DVD Fab Decrypter, which will basically copy all DVD files to you HDD. If you want to, you can simply process them through Shrink.

If, however, you don't mind spending a couple dollars towards a solution, I strongly recommend a program called Slysoft AnyDVD, which simply runs in the background without you having to do anything. It automatically removes the copy protections on the disc so that you can use DVD shrink or DVD decrypter directly without the extra step.

edit: Actually, I double checked and Hoodwinked doesn't seem to have any special copy protection on it. Just good old CSS. The latest versions of DVD Shrink and Decrypter should handle this particular title... Is it in good condition? Any scratches or smudges on it?

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

I tried using Dvdfab Decrypter, only to get a similar error message. Does anybody know what the message means? (The one above) Does it mean that there is copy protection or is it just scratched or something? The disk is in fairly good condition.

Download the 21 day trial of AnyDVD. Run it in the background while using Shrink. If you get the same error... it's a problem with the disc. Exchange it for another.

The error message that i received durring the analyzing process of Shrink read:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.

Failed to read file "D:\"

Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Does that help?

I received that error when I was trying to backup one of my discs. It was because the disc was scratched. First try my AnyDVD method I described above. If that doesn't work... get yourself a new disc.

EDIT: You can also try cleaning your disc with toothpaste (honestly). Rub the toothpaste in a straight motion from the center of the disc to the edge till it is completely covered with a thin layer. Then wash it all off. I've fixed many lightly scratched CDs/DVDs using this method.

EDIT2: DON'T rub in a circular motion... only a straight line from the center to the edge of the disc. Sorry about that mistake.

Another way, although not always conclusive, to determine if you have a bad disc is to simply play it. If you get some problems while playing it and the disc is clean and scratch free, it is most likely a bad press.

I've posted this many of times but use AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter then run it through VobBlanker to get rid of the protection then shrink the movie and this should work. Like brink22 said, you can download the 21 day trial of AnyDVD and try it out. I think you'll end up liking that program a lot. It's nice to have a program that is updated every so often as the newer movies tend to have the protection on it.
