I want to hook a hard drive up to my PS2 and make it so I can play movies and music on my PS2 and put emulators on it. I've been reading message boards but I don't really understand everything. Do I need to have all this stuff on the hard drive before I hook it up? I was wondering if someone could give me easy to understand explanation and possible a little step by step process. Thanks to anyone who can.

I was also wondering that when I hook the hard drive up to the PS2, if I'm able to like download games onto it and play them without actually buying them or even burning them. Also, I don't know if it matters, but I wanted to hook a hard drive out of my computer to my PS2. I know there are hard drive made for going into a PS2, but I'm under the assumption that you can hook up a normal hard drive to it to. If you can't hook a normal hard drive up to a PS2 can someone please let me know. Also where can I buy the network adaptor and mod chips? A link would be great. Thanks.

A PC hard drive will usually work fine as long as it is on the compatibility list. search "PS2 hard drive compatibility" and you will find the sites.
http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list
You can copy games to it either by putting it back in your PC and using Winhiip, or by learning how to set up an FTP connection between the PC and PS2 so you can transfer files to the hard drive without removing it.

http://www.gocybershopping.com/customer/home.php?cat=191

network adapters you will have to find, but most stores that caryy PS2's carry them as well.
DMS4 Pro would be your best choice for a chip if you plan to use a hard drive. The ToxicOS flash that the chip will run on has many features that are geared for people with hard drives.
It can copy games from the disc to hard drive, erase them, run them with built in HD Loader type program, can support large hard drives, and other features.

you'll need a network adapter, old hard drive, hd loader or hd advance, winhiip (program), and usb to ide cable (optional)

1. use the usb to ide cable or open up your computer and connect the hard drive
2. install and run winhiip
3. format your hard drive (WARNING! ONCE YOU FORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE TO THE PS2 FORMAT YOU CANT USE IT AS A PC HARD DRIVE)
4. put the game you want to put on your hdd into your DVD+RW drive and transfer the game to the hdd using winhiip (dont really recall how to do it)
5. hook up your hdd to the network adapter
6. load up hd loader or hd advance and play

ps:
you cant play music and movies off the hdd

Ok, bear with me please....I've read so many threads on this subject and there are a couple of minor details that I have not been able to grasp.

1. Purchase a hard drive - say for example I purchase a 160GB HD compatible with my PS2 V14. Obviously I can't just have it sitting out on the table, so I purchase an enclosure - IDE to USB. I connect this hard drive to my pc via a USB cable. My OS will assign this drive a letter, let's say P: for example.

2. Then I install and run winhiip - on my PC drive C:?

3. Use Winhiip to format my drive P: to PS2 format.

4. Insert my original game and use Winhiip to transfer to my drive P:

5. Hook up my drive P: to my PS2 network adapter (integrated in my V14 PS2). How do I do this? I have a USB HD and an ethernet port on my PS2.

Thank you for your time and patience anyone who answers this for me :-)

For the steps that you mentioned above involving winhiip do you need a modchip in you ps2 to play the games off the hard drive

If you have a V14 then you will need to run the hard drive through USB, like an external type or an internal hard drive installed into a external USB enclosure. Then buy USB Extreme that will run the hard drive on the PS2.
The rest looks right to me but i have a mod chip and had my slimline put in an HD Combo case so i could use an internal hard drive using my DMS4 Pro modchip, but this case is for V12 & V13. I do not think it works with a V14 yet.

Correct, it does not work for V14 yet. That's the response I got from a couple of mod chip storefronts customer support.

I decided to sell my V14 slim ps2 and I bought a used fat one off ebay for a good price. I'm going to try the MC exploit using independencecompiler 4.1 and my 200GB HDD.

One question.....winhiip shows that my HDD is 200GB, but it only shows 120GB as available space for games. I know that HDD's never have the actual size advertised as usable space, but I've never seen 80GB wasted. Maybe 10 or 20 at most.

that is not right, it should be more like 238 free after the format.
the problem is that some versions of Windows and some program will only recognize a maximum of 120GB on any drive. If your windows is not up to date with SP2 then you can only get 120GB out of a hard drive. Not sure about the whole exploit thing and if it has a size limit, the older versions of HD Loader had this limit as well.
Since i have the DMS4 Pro chip it has support for large hard drives and that was not a factor for me.

Could the experts please clear this issue up once and for all? I've searched in the forums and the general consesnsus is that I can't install HD combo onto a v14 console. What i need cleared up is whether it is the HD combo case that will not fit the v14's innards, or does the v14's motherboard not provide the necessary solder points for the HD connection?

It will not fit the HD Combo case.
And from what i was told, by someone who installs them, you can not hook up an IDE hard drive in a V14 due to solder points that have been removed. You need a V12 or V13
Of you will have to go with a USB hard drive.

Thanks for clearing that up. Now to find a used v13 console. I wouldn't want to play any game off a USB1.1 interface, it'd be faster to draw the graphics for it with pen and paper. :)
