I have been backing up DVDs for a couple of years with various programs. I currently use DVD in the background and rip with Shrink and burn with Nero. Have had no problems. But here?s my question.

Up to now I have just been burning to DVD. I would like to have some titles on my Hard drive for easy access. When I go to the folder that contains the currently ripped movie, there are several VTS files that contain the portions of the entire movie. If I click on any one of these files, it plays a portion of the movie but not the entire feature. How do I leave certain titles on my hard drive and have one place to click for the whole feature? In other words, how do I join all the VTS files together? I know you wizards out there can help me,
Thanks,
Don

Hello summitboy.

The easiest way is to rip the DVD as an ISO file and then use Daemon Tools or Nero's ImageDrive to mount the ISO of the DVD as a virtual DVD. Any software that plays DVDs (e.g., Windows Media Player) will play the title this way. Otherwise, you need a software player that plays a folder of video files like Nero Showtime or WinDVD. Just open the VIDEO_TS IFO file with the software and you should be good to go if you have software that plays video from a DVD folder.

Edit: add link to Daemon Tools

Some convert their DVDs to AVI/divX format. The quality isn't as good but the files take up less space on the HDD.

Laddyboy,
I am not a computer Geek. I have been using DVD backup software, DVDXcopy, Decrypter, and now Shrink with AnyDVD. I have had relatively few problems but I must say that my understanding of what actually goes on to accomplish a Backup is pretty rudimentary.

I have scoured Shrink and I don?t find any way to Rip as an ISO file. I seem to remember Decrypter did this but I no longer use that program due to no updates. So, how do I rip the movie to and ISO?

Then I looked at Nero to see what the Imagedrive is. When I found it it was disabled. (I have Nero 6.6.0.8) What happens if I enable it? Will enabling it interfere with any of my current tools and or the way that Nero works? It seems to be something that runs in the background so am I to assume that if it is enabled and I place the ISOs in the folder to be burned it will join them. Obviously I have no clue, can you help?

well you could try using ratDVD, so that way it will compress your VIDEO_TS folder to lets say around 1.5gigs all you have to do i double click on the file created, media player will play it. saves space and all you have to do is use rat to "expand" back to normal when lyou want to burn it...hope that helps

Hello Summitboy.

In DVD Shrink, after clicking the Backup! icon, select ISO Image File from the Select backup target: dropdown menu.

Scoob981 is correct in pointing out that ratDVD is another option.

Also if you have the full version of Nero, try using Nero Showtime to play the folder of files. Just select the IFO file and open it with Showtime.

Activating Nero ImageDrive won't hurt anything else. It's InCD that you never want to use. However, I would deactivate ImageDrive anytime you're not going to use it for a period of time. It takes little time to reactivate again and takes up resources when activated.

I would update to Nero 6.6.0.18 which is the best version of Nero 6. It can be downloaded here after running the Clean Tool:

Thanks Laddyboy for those suggestions. I will try to do this sometime soon. I seem to remember reading on one of these threads that about someone who upgraded to Nero .18 and had nothing but problems so went back to .8 and problems went away. ??? So thats why I have never upgraded to that level. I figure I am having no problems so why fix it?

Again Thanks for your input and I will be in touch

Hello again Laddyboy,
OK, I?ve been messing around. First I backed up Tomorrow Never Dies (arbitrary title just to mess with) as you said ISO from the Drop-down. After about twenty five minutes, I was told that Shrink was done backing up my movie. In the destination folder, I found a strange looking file labeled with the name I chose so I double clicked it. It opened Decrypter as if I was asking to burn but no media player opens when I double click. Am I supposed to do something in decrypter before it will play on the drive?

Meanwhile, in searching for the file, I opened PowerDVD and went to the Open DVD file on Hard drive option and selected the folder that contains the ripped files from the last movie I backed up. Surprise surprise, it plays. But the ISO files, that I just backed up, are not even visible. So it appears that all I have to do is proceed as usual, then go to the folder that I have labeled Current Shrink rip, which is my destination folder. Then I just create a new folder on my drive with the movie title and move all the files there, and I have the movie. Now of course these files are from 4.2 to 7.3 GB depending on the movie being single or dual I guess. In other words, they are not compressed. So as long as I have the HD space, I can do this. Is there a way I could easily compress them and would that interfere with quality?

Thanks for you input,
Don

As long as you have a software player that plays the files you are good to go. If you have an ISO, it has to be virtually mounted (i.e., made to appear to be seen by the OS as being in a DVD drive) with Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, Nero ImageDrive, or some other virual DVD/CD drive mounting software to be playable. Once mounted as a virtual DVD, any software that plays DVDs can play it. When DVDs are in file form, only crtain software players can play the files as though it's a DVD.

There are a couple of approaches to storing DVDs in reduced formats. One is ratDVD which scoob981 mentioned above. It substantially compresses the files so they take up less room on your HDD. The other is converting the DVDs to AVI or DivX files. There's a loss in quality with the conversion of course.

what's up summitboy...i would still have to suggest ratDVD, especially if you are thinking of buring the movie at some point. YOu could convert to DivX or XviD like laddyboy suggested but yes you will lose quality and plus no menus or extras unles you convert extras too. can compress to about 700 - 800 mb and plus if you ever decided to burn the movie, you will hav eto convert back to mpeg2 and author, which is a little hassle plus the free mpeg2 encoders booooo (i'v enever liked them). I used rat to compress kings of new york, came out to be about 1.5g which is only twice that of an AVI. and plus when you "uncompress" (correct me if i'm wrong laddyboy) the movie will be ready to burn and wiht menus/extras you can even pick teh compression setting for the main movie, extra and menus. check out the ratDVD guide to see wht ayou think....by then why(not tryingto act like a big ratDVD fanatic), laddyboy what would you suggest to be the best way?

It's a tradeoff between quality and file size. AVI/divX will provide the smallest file size but at the expense of reduced video quality. ratDVD provides reduced file size while maintaining video quality for the most part. ratDVD is probably the way to go, but I would suggest summitboy try both approaches and see which he finds most acceptable.
