Recently, my PlayStation 2 has been getting to heat levels it has never reached before. I can tell by the fan's speed. It has reached the 3rd speed(not 100% sure how many speeds there are, but I'll take speed 1 as slow, 2 as medium, and 3 as maximum). It boots with the fan going slow, then about 30 to 60 minutes later, the fan's speed increases to medium, then finally, about 2 hours or so later(I play on my system for hours on end), it reaches maximum speed(only with certain games such as Midnight Club 3 DUB Remix). I'm really concerned about my system overheating. I know that slims have a very bad reputation of overheating problems, but I want to take all the measures possible to prevent my PlayStation 2 from overheating. Is the 3rd speed a sign that my console is overheating?
By the way, I know about the remedies to this problem, but I'd like to know if there are any small fans I can plug into an outlet instead of a USB fan to cool my system down.

You are right to think that your system is heating up, but running for 2 or more hours, that is pretty normal.

Where do you usually have your PS2 located? On a table? On the ground? Thrown on a pile of clothes (usually my case)? It's pretty common sense, but if you don't have proper ventilation, things will tend to heat up quicker.

Also, it is usually a bad idea to run your system sitting on the ground because that is where all the dust and dirt in your home will settle. You may considered getting an air duster and having at your PS2 with it.

Do you mean like a real fan that you can put next to your PS2? That would be kinda weird. I have seen kits like this before that use a USB fan and a filter that match the same style as the slimline.

I keep my PlayStation 2 on an old desk next to my TV(it's an open space, with the exception of the lid side of my console sitting against the TV. Other than that, it's an open space). The console is sitting flat, not vertically. Plus, I don't know if the power supply is a factor because I keep it behind the PlayStation 2(not directly on it). And yes, I mean a real fan I can put next to my console.

2 things you can do
1. get a small house fan and put it in front of the PS2 blowing into the vents to help keep it much cooler.

2. get your slimline put into an HD Combo case as it has 2 fans in it rather than just one. This is the more expensive way of course but the advantage is that with the HD Combo case you can install an internal hard drive on a slim PSTwo

Not on mine. I have the Version 14, and the solder points for the HD Combo have been removed. I can't even use HD Connect because it uses the same solder points as the HD Combo.

Why not in the back to get more cold air into the console's fan?

Oh, one more thing, are there any fans the size of the fat's fan that I can plug in to my wall outlet?
