Using ONLY THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS, what is the best combonation (Step by step) for a perfect back-up copy of a dvd?

rip to HDD first using DVDFab Decrypter, then compress using DVD Shrink or Recode (a little faster) and then burn with Imgburn.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

VobBlanker isn't always necessary and can usually be omitted from the guide.

Hello acoolguy.

DVD43 is an evil program and shouldn't be allowed on your computer. It'll bite you sooner or later imo. Pay the bucks and get AnyDVD. It makes like so easy.

As for the rest, all do an excellent job, so just use whatever you want.

AnyDVD, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter do everything necessary for making both SL and DL backups.

The totally free route is DVDFab Decrypter, VOBblanker, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter.

If i ONLY have Dvd Fab, VobBlanker, and Nero, do i also need a program similar to DVD43 or AnyDVD? Im just a bit short on cash at the moment, so AnyDVD just isnt in the question.

Just use the totally free route that LOCOENG provided:

Rip with DVDFab Decrypter
Compress if needed with either DVD Shrink or Nero Recode if you have it.
Burn with DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.

Sometimes Vobblanker or FixVTS is needed to strip "dead cells" and fix DVD navigation but not often.

He also provided a link to a guide by Alcohol to backup using just these programs.

DVD43 has been known to grab hold of your system and refuse to let go. lol. Uninstall it and kill it dead. lol.

Recode is faster than DVD Shrink, but it costs money. DVD Shrink still does a great job and is free. They both produce similar results.

but what do you suggest for ripping? Do you suggest Dvd Fab and then Vobblanker? Just DvdDecrypter?

DVD Decrypter by itself without using PCL files cannot handle all the newest copy protection since it's no longer updated. DVDFab Decrypter is updated and can handle strong protection with the addition of FixVTS or Vobblanker as needed. Use ripit4me as dialysis1 suggested if you don't want to be bothered too much. You need to also download DVD Decrypter, FixVTS, and DVD Shrink and have them installed before running ripit4me.

Personally I'd shell out the money for AnyDVD and use DVD Decrypter for ripping, DVD Shrink for reauthoring and/or compressing, and DVD Decrypter for burning.

ripit4me has only been available recently. Why don't you just try some of the programs and see what you like. Asking questions only goes so far. Even AnyDVD is available for a free trial.

i use AnyDVD (maybe the best 39 dollars ever spent), then DVD Shrink to reauthor and back up the dvd, then Nero to burn the files to a disk. never a problem.

This has to be one of the most subjective questions possible. There are a bevy of quality apps that will get you from point A to point B in fine fashion - it all boils down to personal prefererence.

For someone new to making back ups,
I reccomend DVDfab decrypter to rip to your hard drive,
DVDshrink to compress the file and/or get rid of any extra junk from the dvd,
and finally burn it to disc with DVDdecrypter.

All free programs and all very simple to use.
Also, it's easy to find documentation/help guides on all of them.

Good luck.

I am completely new to all of this and would like to say first a many thanks to all the wonderful people here that put their hard work and time into this forum. I have to say all of the guides I have come across are VERY easy to use and follow.

With all that being said this particular link
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110
is what I used for my newer dvd's that had lots of protection on them. If they were older or less protected I used the http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shr...
BOTH use free programs and both turned out perfect on more than 20 back ups.
Thanks again,
Myst.

Hello.

DVD Decrypter is free as is DVD Shrink, FixVTS, Vobblanker, and many other programs. Links to the software are in my signature below.

There are three basic approaches to backing up DVDs.

The first is a commercial approach. CloneDVD2 from Slysoft is a one click solution.

CloneDVD2: http://www.slysoft.com (free trial)

The second is a partial commercial, partial free approach.

Use AnyDVD from Slysoft to decrypt and overcome structural copy protection found on commercial DVDs. Then use DVD Shrink to compress/re-author the DVD and DVD Decrypter to burn to a blank disk.

AnyDVD: http://www.slysoft.com (free trial)
Guides: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm

The third approach is totally free.

Use DVDFab Decrypter to rip the DVD to your hard drive.
Use Vobblanker or FixVTS to clean up the ripped files.
Use DVD Shrink to compress/re-author the cleaned up files.
Use DVD Decrypter to burn the files to a blank disk.

Guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

There is now a new approach, also free, available using a new program ripit4me that automates the process to an extent using free software.

Download and install DVD Decrypter, FixVTS, and DVD Shrink. Then download and run ripit4me.

ripit4me: http://www.ripit4me.org/

There's a guide at the ripit4me site as well as this one:

Hi Macmj,
Here is a link to the original DVD Decrypter I found.
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/DVD_Decrypter/1011845169/1
You will also need to download FixVTS which can be done with this link http://www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS/ and you will need DVD Shrink.
I used that combination with arniebear's guide which I posted a link above in previous post for some of the newer movie's with encryption codes that shrink alone could not handle. However, I always try using Shrink and Nero 6 first using this guide http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shr... until you get the hang of it. Of course that is provided you have Nero 6. The guides will give you step by step instructions and also tell what each program is used for. Hope this helps. Oh,If you've never done back ups before make sure all of your media is compatible with your burner and player. For example formats -R or +R write speeds and brands. This will save a lot of time and headaches.

Good Luck!

Well, as the message states; if you want a PERFECT Back-up of a dvd; the first thing to do is to go get some DL discs; otherwise the back-up will not exactly be 'perfect' even if it is a good burn. Although; whenever I am not using DL's, I'll try AnyDVD + Clone; or even more often I normally rip with DVD Decrypter and Burn with Nero in Shrink. (AnyDVD stills runs in the background though.) And if the movie quality is too low; I'll run the IFO through VOB Blanker and then Shrink. And if EVEN after that it's still not a good enough quality; I'll use the Deep Analysis and the 'sharp' quality enhancement in addition to running it through VOB Blanker.

P.S. That's if I'm not using ISOs. (*DUH*...LOL!)
