Hi- can anyone offer some help or suggestions? I've been an avid burner of movies for a solid year now. Lately, my movies are skipping, and weirdly enough, it skips about 20 min into the movie both on my dvd player and my dvd rom. My friend doesnt't seem to be having a problem playing the same discs on her dvd player. I burn with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink with AnyDVD in the background. I get no burn errors. The firmware has all been updated. I've been having a problem burning cd's too. The drive won't read the cd for burning, but it will still play the cd. I read that a burner usually lasts about 1000 burns. I have probalbly reached that number. Is it time to say goodbye to my burner?

@sewcrazy
Welcome to aD
May not be time to say goodbye. Let's get some more info 1st.
*What's the make, model and firmware version of the burner
*What media are you using for CD's & DVD's
*Rated speed of the media using
*Burn speed
*Do you have a problem with playback in the burner?
It's hard to put a number on how many burns a burner can do. Some will last much longer than others. Quality of the manufacturer can be one factor in how they will last.

I am using an hp dvd420i, firmware 1.25 (I think). I am not consistent with my media, right bow both cd and DVD+R are Maxell. The last batch of Maxell worked fine although it's probably been 5 months since the last batch. I always use name brand. The current discs are rated for 8x and I burn at around 4x. The burnt disc skips on the dvd burner that I use when trying to watch the movie. Is it toast? I was considering getting some Fuji discs because they always seem to work well for me.

The Maxell's should be good if made in Japan, stay away from most media made in Taiwan....Verbatim being the exception. Keep you burn speed slow and don't multitask during the burn.

Try the Fuji or Verbatim media before you do anything else. Maxell does have good media, but it is only the Made In Japan media. Otherwise, the Made In Taiwan will code out as CMC Mag AE1 which is not good media and will give you troubles. As for your burner from what I read the 420i can be flashed with 420n fw, if you want to try this out, current is 1.33. It is up to you, sometimes flashing can cause problems for your burner.
