heres what i have: usb-ide adapter, western digital 40gb hd, hdadvance 3.0. i have tried to connect hdadvane and hdl_dump via a network, but that didnt work since apparantly idk wtf a "crossover" cable is as opposed to a network cable. so now that i connect the hdd to my pc via usb, winhiip keeps saying "There is a problem with reading the hard drive" everytime i select my hdadvance formated drive. is there something im doing wrong...any jumpers i may have misplaced? (currently at master) plz help

That sounds like a problem that is PC side. Maybe the ide adapter is cuting out on your or it is under powered. It could also be that you are getting bad sectors on your HDD and it really is having a hard time reading your hard drive.

If you can afford to, reformat with winhiip with a full format and see if it gives you the same problem. If you cannot reformat, install the HDD in your PC and repeat the process. If you still get errors, the problem is with your hard drive. If you don't get errors, the problem is with your ide adapter.

I have heard a lot of issues with the usb-ide adapters not just from ps2 modders, but from computer techs too. Seems that they have a problem being unreliable.

thing is when i put the hd inside the pc (under slave ofcourse), it reads up fine, hdl_dumb and winhiip both work fine. but its a totaly different case with the usb-ide adapter, im really starting to think its that bloody adapter, if so, it'll be the first time i buy something from newegg that doesnt work.

If you have the money, I would suggest getting something like this:

Basically it is a mobile rack that is installed in a 5.25 usb enclosure (like a usb cd drive). I didn't have enough cash to actually get this one, but i bought the mobile rack and modified a real usb cd drive so that it would fit.

It is extremely useful because my hard drives aren't exposed when i work on them and they are easily accessable.
