I was wondering if someone would tell me what difference encoding using 5 passes instead of the usual 2 makes: I realise that the standard is 2, but some encoders seem to allow for a specified no of passes.

thanks in advance.

the more passes you do, the better quality of video comes out. However, there gets a point where you can do more but the increase of quality is negligeble. Example, CCE lets you go up to 6 passes, I have found that difference between 4 and 6 is neglible, but the increase of encoding time is not...so, I use 4.
