Advice on buying a modded PS2

Hi,

Recently I've been considering buying a modified PS2. I've spent the last few days searching the interweb for the answers to a variety of questions, some of which I have found, some I haven't. Eventually I stumbled upon this one which seems pretty comprehensive and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

What to buy?

I've read lots about things like swap magic, memory card exploits, mod chips and hard drives. At the moment I'm leaning towards getting one with a mod chip, on the proviso that it shouldn't be too hard to add a compatible hard drive later, although I would gladly take one with both. But which mod chip should I look out for? Are there any I should avoid?

Also in terms of the console itself, I'm leaning towards the non-slimline version solely because it would seem to me that it would be the cheaper option. I have also heard that some versions (12?) have faulty lasers?

Where to buy

Let me prefance this question by saying that I live in Sydney, Australia. At the moment I'm leaning towards ebay, but am wary of faulty goods, so if anyone knows of any reputable pre-modding businesses operating down under (like the equivalent of modchip.ca) I would be grateful.

I'd also appreciate a list of key questions I should ask someone before forking out the money, which leads to my final question:

How much should I pay?

I wouldn't be comfortable in paying more than $AU 250, less postage, for a console that is technically 6 years old. What do you guys think I should be paying?

hi im new,but ive been researching alot like you have, about modchips i have heard that you should get Matrix Infinity or DMS4 Pro,if you just buy a normal ps2 and looking forward to buying a modchip then buy one of those brands and get someone who is a expert at modding,to chip your ps2.For me im getting my copy of swap magic 3.6 + swap tool pro 2006 torrmorow,as it works like a modchip but doesnt void your warranty.Also personally i wouldnt go for modchips as they can cause problems to your console.But go ahead and buy a console with a modchip.

Since your using ebay, im using trademe (www.trademe.co.nz) ,ebay should have some auctions with consoles that have modchips,pretty much i dont think theres modchip in australia maybe because since this happened

just found it on google and it says that its illegal to sell to australians,bad luck buddy.Nah jokes..... just stick with ebay,if nothing happens try and order online from a mod site in the U.S. or something.Im not really sure since the case sounds real.

really right now you should be paying for a modchip which is at least $120 and Under maybe less,but i would stick with $80 NZ if it includes installition.If you find modded consoles then buy them for at least $250 and under.
