i dont know why, but when i put in a DVD-R my computer doesnt recognize it. in DVD Decrypter it says no medium present. im 99% positive this is a dvd burner, cause in Nero at the bottom it says dvd-r+rw and on the burner itself it says dvd rewritable. anyone know whats wrong?

Hello.

Does the burner show up in the My Computer window?

What brand and model is the burner?

Is it on the secondary IDE channel as the slave device or the master device?

Did you install this drive yourself or did it come with your system?

Do the following:
Right click on MY Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Click the + beside DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

What is listed there?

Now click the + beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Double click Secondary IDE Channel and select the Advanced Settings tab.

For Device 0 what does it say for Transfer Mode and Current Transfer Mode? Is there anything listed for Device 1?

Hi,
I don't think your burner can burn DVD-R's, although I have never experienced a case like this because DVD-R's are older then DVD+R's, so they should be supported on most DVD Writers. Check out this page to see what your burner supports:

Knowledge is imminent...

Hello.

Unfortunately it only does burn +R and +RW. Sorry. It's a pretty old drive. Why not update to a newer burner?

For the same price of quality media you can get a very nice burner. Thats the way to go. If you bought 100 blank discs it seems you want to do some backing up..newer burners are real sweet. There is a lot of good info in here regarding burners too. Good luck
