Hi, I bought a v5 ps2 as a replacement for the one I broke about a month ago, now its making weird noise grinding noises when I play certian things. Burned cd's dont hardly play and burned dvd +r's play but when they're loading up it makes the grinding scratching noise almost like the disc spinning too fast. Regular cd's dont load at all, and regular dvd's play but take forever to load, but games work fine. I know the laser isnt dirty becuase I had it professionally cleaned a couple weeks ago. Btw heres a list of the stuff I tried in the ps2.
cd r: mix cd
dvd+r: Friday the 13th 8: Jason Takes Mannhattan
cd: Forgotten Freshness Vol. 2 by ICP
dvd: Bruce Almighty
game:Mortal Kombat: Shoalin Monks

laser is most likely either worn out or it just needs to be adjusted.
http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=ps2repair see the above link for how to adjust it.
Try that first of course. My old V5/G got that way after a while and i had to adjust the laser, but after years of use even the adjustments stopped working for me so i just had it replaced since i was getting a modchip put in it anyway.
Worked great ever since, well at least that is what the friend i donated it to tells me :)

ok, i guess i'll replace mine with like a v7 or v8 cuase cleaning and adjusting the laser is how i broke my first one. i had taken it apart airdusted evrything then used this specialized solution to clean the laser, adjusted it where it read everything perfect, then the top part with the ribbon cable fell off the table, then everything went to hell when i tried to fix that.

yes, you have to be careful when opening it. But if you are going to buy a new one anyway why not give it a go since it doesn't work well anyway.
My suggestion is save your money, go to Teammodders.com, and buy a slightly used V7 with DMS4 Pro SE Chip
Then you will be set, also you can then add the hard drive with no extra software needed, just a network adapter.
Then once you have all the games on the hard drive you will not be using your laser at all, and the life span will be well extended.

Also, DVD+Rs aren't the best to use with PS2s

i didn't say they don't work, simply that DVD-R always seems to be more flexible

DVD-R is more compatible. All version PS2's can play those no problem where as +R some machines will just not read.
Before i bought a burner that could booktype them to DVD-Rom neither of mine would play DVD+R well at all.

Some people have also reported that some PS2 models may have compatibility issues with 16x discs. However I use 16x Verbatim DVD-R with Swap Magic on the PAL silver old chunkier model and they play flawlessly.

Very true, mine hate 16X.
Even my burner has a big problem with them and will give me write errors when i try to use them. But that could just be the brand of disc as well. Philips 8X DVD-R have been flawless
Philips 16X DVD+R have been nothing but a waste of money. Bought them just as a trial and figured if games didn't work i could use them for movies, now i guess i will have to use them as data storage
if my burner will allow it. If not i will use them as frisbee's for my dog :)

LOL, yeah i guess i could. I have like 40 of them left i think.
But who knows if they will work. My BenQ DW1655 burner is pretty darn good and has no problems with any discs, until these.
