I am a PS2 noob living in Europe. I want to buy a PS2 but I do not understand the difference between PAL and US format.
If I buy a PS2 in Europe will it play US games when I return to the States?
Thanks

The answer: no. The console won't even work because in the United States, they use NTSC compared to PAL in Europe. It's a different video standard. Plus, in Europe, the outlets are different compared to America. The design of the plugs are different, and PAL consoles need 220 to 240 volts of electricity to work. NTSC outlets only put out 110-120 volts of electricity.
Answer to second question: no. PlayStation 2s have specific region codes in America(NTSC U/C), Europe/Australia(PAL), China(NTSC C), and Japan/Asia(NTSC J). A European console has PAL region code, while an American PlayStation 2 has NTSC U/C region code. So, you can only play games that match your PlayStation 2's region code unless you get a boot disc with a case MOD or a MOD chip(illegal in Britain, legal in Italy and Spain, and I don't know about the rest). It will cancel the region code check(I think) and you can play backup games(games that have been burnt). Just remember, you have to own the original. Where in Europe are you living?

OK, your answers make no sense. First, ac adapters are very plentiful if I need one..... but PS2 is world current and will work with 120 or 240.
Next, my ps2 asks me if I want 50 or 60 htz, so that is not a problem...
Finally, my original question was: are PAL and NTSC compatible and evidently the answer is NO.

They made perfect sense to me. And its not a good idea to diss the answers/advice given to you when you ask for help.
Its not the PS2 that asks you if you want 50/60Hz, its the game, and not all games have 50/60Hz support.
PS2 is not 'world current' as you call it, you will require a method of transforming the power difference from the power supply to the PS2, otherwise it won't power on or will fuse, depending on which way you're importing; Europe > US or US > Europe.
You'd also need an adapter for the plug to change from a 3-pin Euro plug to a 2-pin US plug.
Once you've overcome the power supply differential, you'll need some wy of booting NTSC games on a PAL system anyway, such as modchip or swap discs. PS2s are region coded.
Always 1st with 100% working PS2 Online Game DNA$ IDs!!

OK, you want an end all answer.
Then buy a PAL PSTwo system with a quality mod chip like DMS4 Pro SE or Matrix Infinity(watch for clones!!)
It will power up in Europe being PAL and will play games from any region because of the QUALITY mod chips mentioned
