I recently just learned how to set ring tones to my phone. Here is how i do it:
First you have to convert the song file on your computer to mp3 and make sure that the file is only at most 20 sec long -+ 1 sec(otherwise the phone will not let you use the file as a ring tone). Because VZN is all about being legal, the way to applying your own music as a ringtone is a bit tricky (not really, but if they weren't stupid we wouldnt have to go through annoying steps). After you shorten the song using a program (i recommend audacity, you can just delete the parts you dont want in the song) and export it as an mp3) you can put it in your transflash card in the motorola>shared>audio directory (i think that's the address). Now when you put the card into the phone the phone should recognize it in the sounds menu (make sure to switch storage devices by clicking the menu button in the sounds menu). The phone can only use sounds and songs that are stored directly onto the phone, not in an external card, so you have to move the mp3 file onto the phone. Since VZN cripples most of the innovative functionality of this phone, you have to work around it. The way i do it is go to the song file in the sounds menu of the ext card and press menu. then i go to send in pix msg and i send it to 555-555-5555 (doenst matter what number, but you wudnt want to send it to someone random and charge them money). When you send the msg to that number with the shortened mp3 file, it should generate an error, which is a good thing. But one time it actually sent from my phone which sucks cuz i have to pay the like 2 dollars. NEvertheless, to ensure that it doesnt send, you can cancel the msg while it's trying to send the file to that number. AFter either getting an error or canceling the delivery, go to your outbox and you should see that msg in it. click it and it should start playing the file. then click menu and go to save items and then file. I think there is also an option to apply it as a ringtone directly from there and it will change all the calls alerts (for all the styles) to that song. Make sure to store it to the phone. This is from memory, so i hope that works, some of the later steps may say something different on the phone, but the point is to move the file onto your phones memory and it will show up in the sounds menu with all the other ringtones so you can choose it.
I think another way to do it is send the file to yourvznnumber@vzn.com or something, but then it costs money to check the msg or something. my way should cost you no money.
I think the MIDI files (.mid) are just the "secured" vzn dl files and on the moto v710 (predecessor to the e815) you needed to change the extension of the mp3 file to that so the phone will recognize it. the e815 doesnt have that problem.
