My question is this if I have a maximum 8X burner and my dics are 16x can I still burn them.

I only burn at 4X never more. I have burned tons and tons of 8X dvd's. My new ones are 16X and say illegal disc, is it because it can only burn at 8X and not 16X.

thanks in advance you guys and gals

@talonman,
First thing to look at here is this: Is your Burner's Firmware up to date? What Burner do you have? Maybe We can direct you to a download link to update your firmware. If you use good quality media, like Verbatim 16X DVD+R. You should be able to burn them sucessfully at 4x even if you do have an 8X burner. Rule 1, never burn at the media's Maximum rated speed. If you do, you're asking for problems. I have 16x LG Burners and I never burn anything at 16X. With Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden I burn at 8x. 1/2 the rated speed. I never have issues with quality either. If you have an 8x Burner, it must be an older one. Burner prices have dropped a lot. You may want to consider a new one soon. Just trying to help you. You can get a very nice, High Quality Burner for under 50 bucks now.

Yeah,if you have a good burner and use good quality medias,you can burn 8x medias at 8x without any problem,o need to drop the speed at 4x,but for the 16x medias,this would be an exception and better stick with the half speed burning thumb rule.Also,on some burners,burning at very low speed will give not so good results than if burn at 8X.I've noticed that normally the 8x speed is the optimal burning speed for burning movies(with good burners &good medias).

Like bunnyrip has said,your problem may be due to firmware and needs to be updated.
