Hi,

I have been running an internal HD in my PS2 for years with HD-Advance. I heard about SMS and thought brilliant, be able to watch movies straight off the HD, no more converting video files and burning onto disks!

So i found out i need to format part of the 120GB Maxtor HD i got installed into the PS2. I also found out I would need "DMS HDD Format Tool". Now thats where im confused.

Its only released as a .ELF. I was wondering is there a windows based version or .iso because I normally connect the PS2 HD to my computer internaly and transfer games using HDL_Dumb so i was hoping i could either install the utlity onto the HD and boot from there or use a windows based version and format on the computer.

2nd Problem:

Once I have it formatted, could I not view the contents through windows and just drag and drop items (mp3s + avi's) into there? If not is there no program that will allow me to view the contents like HDL_Dumb allows you to view the PS2 formatted HD (but only allows you to install .iso's so cant be used).

Thanks!

You can boot the elf file from CD: http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=bootelf.html

Is there no other way of getting DMS HDD Format Tool for windows or formatting part of the PS2 formatted HD back into FAT32 using the computer.

Just i dont have a chipped PS2, just running a harddrive with HD Advance.

not that I know of, you can try partition tools and see if those work, but I've never tried it so I'm not sure if they work or not

Thanks Dan!

Just had a thought, if i burnt the ELF file on a CDR it would create a backup. Now you can install backups using HDAdvance so is it possible to install the utility onto the HardDrive and then ask it to format? Im running a tad low on CD's which is why im asking otherwise i would of just gone ahead with it!

I'm not sure if that would work but I guess it's worth a try, got nothing to lose (you can create an image using UltraISO or something so you don't have to burn it to a CD)

Ahh lol! I didnt realise an .ELF was an image file. Il just mount it using Deamon and use winhiip to install it onto the HardDrive. Doubt it will work but worth a shot.

If it doesnt, il just have to go the long route just to format the damned thing!

Cheers

Ok found the tutorial which is for me. Thought I would link for others in the same boat:

http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/hdl_net_inst/hdloader.html

Looks long but i guess the end result will be worth it.

Actually no elf files are different from image files, you need to make an image of a CD WITH the elf file... look here http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=bootelf.html (I posted this link earlier) for info on how to do that, and instead of doing this and burning it to a CD just save it as an image file (I think in Nero there's even an Image Recorder that lets you save to image instead of CD-R), then install it like you would with a normal game.

Winhiip can install image files directly so you don't need to use Daemon tool to mount it

I've progressed slightly! I've installed LaunchELF onto my HD and also put the HDD Format Tool onto the memory card via ExecFTP + FlashFXP through my router (other method didnt work). Used it to format 2048mb on the HD. Now however im unsure how to actually access that partion. I used this guide:

http://exploitstation.com/articles/e.../ExecFTPs.html

Near the bottom it explains how to mount the HD but i've had no luck. It keeps saying mounting failed. Also when i open pfs, there is no 0 folder there? Shall i just plug the PS2 HD into my computer via IDE cable or have i missed something easy?

Wooo installed the standalone version of ExecFTP and its working! Im moving a video file right now. Just wondering whats the best utility to use for moving large files? Just i want to move a 1GB movie over and im only transporting at 140KB/s!

Thanks!

best way to transfer data is to connect the HDD directly to the PC... network is way too slow for this

Cant, the PS2 Partitions cant be read by windows. Only way is via FTP or through a host.
