My PS2 gave in. What should I do?

My V4 PS2 finally gave in after 3 years of the DRE sympton. I can hear the disc drive load up but the usual normal operating sound is gone now, which leads me to believe that the laser may be dead.

I've only started playing backups through the MC exploit a few weeks ago with Sony D11 DVD+Rs. This may be the reason behind the presistent DRE, but oh well.

So what are my options? Should I just replace the laser or just go out and buy a new PS2? Cost effectiveness? Trade it in? I need some knowledgeable input on this issue. Thanks.

well, the laser plus install you are talking about $50 for the laser and another $35 for install then about $15 for Priority Mail shipping each way. So that is actually the cheapest way.

Then there is replacing it. You can get a quality used one at a place like gamestop or EB Games for $89.99 some even come with a game for that price

Then of course spend the money to PROPERLY mod your system. Like Swap Magic and a fliptop.

Then there is the best and most expensive way. That is to go somewhere like Teammodders.com, pay the $220 for a premodded, slightly used V7 with DMS4 Pro SE
Then your possibilities from there will go through the roof, like adding a large hard drive later and already having all you need to run it (saving your new laser). Never having to rebuild games. Never having to swap discs, and the list goes on.
