Date not appearing on pc

I cant get the date to appear on footage transferred from my Sony HC35E to my pc.
The date / time appears ok on the viewfinder on my camcorder, and I have set the camcorder 'DISP OUT' to now be ' V-OUT / LCD' which is the only setting I can see that seems to relate to this.
There is no mention of thisproblem in the manual, but I seem to remember this issue with another camers.
I am using Windows Move Maker. The picture/ sound transfer fine.

Hi there,
Let me take a wild guess here !
This time and date is displayed by the camcorder ONLY.
It's probably written on the tape, and only your camcorder sees that data, when you copy it to yout pc, all you get is the video part.
Am I right ?
Anyone ?

I would think it would let you do either or. Theres probably a setting in the menu that will let you time/date stamp your video, or choose not to do it.
Read your manual or call customer support and find out. I cant bealive they wouldnt give you the option to time/date stamp your video.

Im sure its stamped on the tape as it shows whn using playback on the camera.
It just isnt being transferred by Windows Movie Maker.
The manual tells you to change a setting , as I have done as above, but to no avail.
I know I can try Customer support, but they just probably know how to use the camera, and I tend to get better and quicker answers from you guys !

Just an update on this . When I play the footage direct from my Mini DV to my television , then the date does appear.
But still I cant get the date to appear when copying from my camera to my my pc via Windows Movie Maker.
The camera manual tells you to ensure the setting DISP OUT is set to V-OUT / LCD (as opposed to LCD) , is set , which it is.
Anybody offer any help here ?

Using your computer, can you play the minidv?
If not, do you have a video card that allows you to connect a periferal, VHS/DVD player? This in order to play the disk and record it to your HDD, then utilize WMM. Outside of that, my next suggestion is to update the device driver for your video camera software, and or, check to see if there's not a newer version available of the camera software. I had the same problem with mine until updating the camera software, although is not a Sony, but got fixed anyway, uses vhsc. I can use my video card to run DVD Decrypter to copy to HDD and then utilize WMM to edit, modify.
If your camera has the option of "only" [vid out], use that, being the "lcd" option is for viewing at the same time. Also, if you cn get it recorded to your PC, you can use the option of "import video" to bring it up.

Better yet, my version of WMM is 2.1.4, in the tools tab, under "titles and credits" you can type in the time/date/title to show before/during or after the movie.
Hope that helps, I know it's not an answer to your question, but a possible work around.

Hi Nero - thanks for the replies. I will check the Sony website to ensure I have the latest drivers.
I have ended copying some of the footage meanwhile , and will use the 'add credits' option in WMM to put the date on.
I have emailed Sony , but dont expect a quick response. I will also try and call them today . My guess is they will say the camera works and its WMM.
The camera only has the options of LCD or Vid out/ LCD. I have tried both just in case.

One quick question, is the disk you're using re/recordable,(/RW)? As in can be recorded over time and again? Or is/are it/they only once recordable,(+/-R)?
And of course Sony's not going to accept culpability for such a minor situation, it's obviously going to be tossed onto WMM.
Hopefully there is a driver update for you camera, software usually is a purchase, but, if it's an old RW disk that could cause problems also.

I am just copying to my hard disk - and the date doesnt show.
I have tried burning to a dvd and Im sure the date doesnt appear.
I have had an email from Sony saying that the date doesnt work copying to a pc using iLink !
That is not correct as I have seen it work , albeit on another make of camera that wasnt even a new model.
I await their response back. (he didnt say it, but he mayve meant just Sony, but even still thats either wrong or Sony are way behind the times on this).

Im gobsmaked - and very irate at having spent several hundred pounds on a camera that cant even copy the date to a pc ...

can't say I blame you, have to add another step to your copy proccess! Rediculous, copy it to vhs, then to pc. That's stupid, it's already on a disk.

When SONY say:

They are talking rubbish! The Date and Time info is transferred but is just not visible.
Here's how I do it (albeit not 100% free)
1. use any program you like to capture from DV to an AVI file on your computer
2. use DV Time Stamp from
http://dts8888.com/vDTS/vdts.htm (cost $20)
this will time and date stamp the AVI file using the info contained in the file.
DV Time Stamp is not the only product - I have also used the adobe premiere plugin that is available (cost $20). There are probably a few other programs which do the trick.
Hope this helps with what you want.

Many thanks for the tip Rabdo.
In some ways just adding the date manually at the start of the clip has proved better - as it means it isnt on that days footage all the way through. But maybe Im just trying to be positive !

Just out of interest, the software I mentioned does give the option of when the date and/or time appear - it can fade in and out just at the start, or be on the film continuously - you can also change the font and position of the text - it really is quite versatile.
I obviously use it because I need my footage to always have the date and time but you may not need it if you just want to have the date at the start of the film. There is a free trial on their website so you may want to give it a go.
