is it it possible to have slim ps2 chipped with DMS4 Pro SE and use an internal harddrive but have the hard drive just sitting next to the ps2? if i do this all i need is a ide cable right?
i have to do it this way because i cannot afford the whole combo box thing some web sites are trying to sell me

they are trying to sell you that because that is the correct way it should be done, But yes it is expensive. Here are some options.
I do not think it will be as easy as just putting an IDE hard drive in an external enclosure and hooking up an IDE cable.

P.S. If you go with an encloser that runs through USB do not expect increase load times.
Just buy the HD Combo Case or HD Connect system.
