I hope I am posting in the right subject here goes. When I run dvd-shrink the dvd drive just stops during analysing and if I get past that it will stop about 75% or more during the encoding. It used to work just fine been using it for over a year. I've tried different discs and tried using dvd decripter as well and the same thing happens just stops about 3/4 of the way done. I have a DVD burner and DVD rom in my computer both drives act the same way. I used the burner to burn a DVD a few days ago and all is fine just seems now to just stop during a read. Any suggestions anybody ? Thanks !

What movie are you trying to backup?

Use DVDfab Decrypter(free) it will break all the latest movie encryptions while ripping the movie onto your HDD, then open shrink.

It is more than likely that shrink can not handle the protection on the dvd.

You can get DVDFab Decrypter here http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm and here is a guide http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=51904

I've tried to use DVD-Decrypter as well as Nero to copy any dvd..and it just stops 3/4 of the way..no error messages..computer still responds it doesnt lock it up and it acts this way in both drives...

This is what to do if you are having trouble backing up your movies:

Here is the free way of making perfect backups:

1) DVDFab Decrypter - this wil break the movies encryption while ripping the movie to your HDD

http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

2) VobBlanker - Not always needed, but it will get rid of any protection that DVDFD left behind. VobBlanker also allows you to blank, replace, cut and strip titles.

http://www.jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

3) DVDShrink - this will allow you to compress the movie to fit onto a blank DVD-5 disc. Select your output as an ISO image

http://filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/

4) Imgburn - the best free burner around

http://www.imgburn.com/

Here are some guides:

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=51904 DVDFab Decrypter guide

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154 DVDFab Decrypter and VobBlanker guide by Alkohol

http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/article_vobblanker_page1.html VobBlanker guide

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ Shrink guide

The other free option:

Use RipIt4Me. I do not know anything about ripit4me so I will leave you with the excellent guide by arnibear. You can also download it from the same link

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110

The other way $$$$$

AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie. All you have to do is start up AnyDVD and continue using your normal compression engine, whether it's shrink, recode or CloneDVD, It's that easy.

Before you pay for this excellent program you have a 21 day trial

What else to do if the above does not work:

1) Update your dvdwriters firmware

2) Invest in good quality media Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims are best

3) Check your dvd's for dirt, scratches

4) clean your dvd

If your dvd still does not back up, you most properbly have a badly authord dvd, so your only solution is to exchange it.

I may try some of these other software solutions but I've already tried three different ones I have on both of my drives with the same results. What I don't understand that it used to work slick as a whistle no problems..until now and I don't what has happened to cause this as I have not copied any DVD's in a while until I tried two days ago. The computer is a P4 with 250GB drive 512M mem with a NEC DVD burner and a Samsung DVD Rom from Gateway about a year and half old and I am really selective about installing software on it and I checked for virus adware malware etc and all is clean...

Try uninstalling and reinstalling?

Could your DVD drive be going? Probably not, but something to think about.

Is the DMA on for these drives, here is a guide. Also, check and make sure your IDE cable is not going bad, and it connected tightly.

I've checked on DMA it is showing as active..and if it is the drive cable why can I burn from the drives fine but stall during a read?

@ Mark_2112,

hey, so r u getting that error only on the same disk or u r getting that error while using different disks?

also what movie r u trying to rip?
Is the movie dirty or scracthed?
Also did u try DVDFab decrypter? if not this is a good ripper for dirty or scracthed disks, that error is usually a scrachted disk or a new protection

U can get DVDFab in pazzini's post

Only thing I can tell you is to try blowing some canned air into the drive, it may be some dirt that is in there. How old is this burner anyway?

And this is on both drives, the reader and the burner?

Edit: Have you put in any new sw, any sw or OS updates recently?

Have you tried a system restore to back before you had the problems. It is unusual for both drives to crap at the same time with the sam problem. Got to be some conflict somewhere.
