I currently use Win XP as an operating system. If I want to rip DVD's, is it necessary that I change to Win 2k, or is there another way around this problem?

Hello Horace_64,

I'm not aware of any problem specific to "Win XP".
You should be able to backup DVDs without changing your operating system. :)

Gee thanx for gettin back to me on this so soon, guys! :-) I am brand nu to this site, so I appreciate the feedback...

I'm very new to this, so forgive me- but I read something earlier about IFO edit being
somewhat incompatable with Win XP. I read it on the FAQ section for newbies, and it said "recommend you change to Win 2K" ???

You're welcome. :)
I use ifoEdit with no problems.
The only software I've had trouble with is Vobedit. For it to work with XP you have to run it in "Windows98/ME" compatibility mode. ;)

Thanx 4 da quick response ddlooping!! This site has some amazingly patient people :-)

So you use Win XP too? When I try to download it I get a bright red page that says "No File Leeching Allowed. Your browser or download manager/accelerator does not support "referrer_document", a necessary feature to download files from this site.
You cannot use bookmarks to download from this site" (whatever that means?)

Any ideas? I know I'm wet behind the ears but atleast I'm trying. I have so many questions, like why did I read " Q: IFOEdit doesn't work on my Win XP?! A: Yeah, life is tough, it doesn't. I recommend sticking with good old W2k"
Its right there on this site at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/5540

I do use XP Home and ifoEdit is working fine. :)
I don't know what kind of problem this post was refering to.
You didn't say what you were trying to download when you get that "No File Leeching Allowed" message, so I can't help you on that one. ;)

Hi ddlooping! Sorry!! What I was referring to about "leeching" was IFO edit. It won't let me download it, and tells me "No File Leeching...etc" as mentioned above. So where do I go from here?

Thanking you in advance for your patience so far!! 78r,

You can download it from this page:

It should hopefully work. ;)

IFOedit is not needed to back up a DVD

DVD Decrypter
DVD2One
Nero

I've done plenty back ups on WinXP Pro

As to 'leeching...' , that is because you need to allow this or other website (doom9) refferal sending - it's in Tools/Internet Options on your browser !!

Peace

This is what is displayed when I try to download from your link, ddlooping: AfterDawn.com, cd-rw.org and Dawnload.net don't allow hotlinking to our downloads...

herbsman, thanks for your input, only, I'm still at a loss. I looked at Tools/Internet Options on my browser, and didn't see anything related to refferal sending- I have Win XP home edition. Perhaps you could be more specific? I would be grateful :-)

try d/l DVD Decrypter free here : http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1011845169
if it failed to d/l it should show you a pictorial on what settings to change in Internet Options

alternatively try this - Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Edit... then type in http://www.afterdawn.com/ and press allow

Thanx herbsman, but I had already tried Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Edit... etc, and not only that, I killed norton, internet alert, postal inspector and pop up killer using a program called EndItAll and still got no-where. Perhaps what interests me in IfoEdit is all the hype and praise it recieves and it seems to indicate that there is a way around having to use 2 discs to rip a dvd instead of just one?

I aught to tell you what software I DO have, in my possesion, before off and downloading any software that has no more capabilities than what I already have? 1st off, I have all the sony software that came with my DRU-500AX, ie RecordNow DX, DLA, Simple Backup, MyDVD and Power DVD- including Nero 5... I also have Roxio easy CD & DVD Creator 6 (When I tried Disc copier from Roxio it copied the entire DVD, only to tell me that it needed a 7.1GB disc to write it to- is there such a thing as a 7.1GB disc? Or is it all about compression?)

I have made DVD's from my Sony Camcorder, but wouldn't it be great if I could back up my pre-recorded DVD's, I'm thinking...

herbsman, you know a lot more about my set-up than you did before- I eagerly await any advice you care to give- though I humbly realise I have a long way to go yet!! Thanx 4 listening!! :-)

Right for starters I didn't notice any good ripping software from your list.

1) If your unable to d/l either Smartripper or DVD Decrypter then I'm sure someone will send them to you (there's nothing wrong with this)

2) You WILL need a compression app , DVD Shrink is free but I personally choose to you use DVD2One (£30 http://www.dvd2one.com/ )

You should be more on the right track after this ...

Horace_64, it all comes down to how much quality you want to achieve and if your equipment will enable you to see the differences between backup softwares.

Here is a comparison between an original frame (top), the same frame after treatment by Instant Copy (middle) and DVD2One (bottom):
http://www.videoxone.net/mb1/instantcopy7/images/bildvergleich4.jpg

Please understand I'm not trying to "sell" you anything, just to show you the results achieved by 2 different softwares. ;)
There are a lot of options available out there, some giving better results than others, usually at the expense of the time neccessary to achive them.
I'd suggest you try and inform yourself by reading as many threads on as many forums as you can. :)

Hey there dd!! And welcome Ken!!

This, I must say, was both informative and funny. It came at a moment when a good old fashioned roar of laughter was somehow un-aware of its desire to express itself, making it an even funnier experience. So thank you both!! :-)

Okay, so I'm sold on DVD2One. But will it do what SmartRipper claims it can do, or IfoEdit, for that matter? What you have to understand is my absolute ignorance about DVD ripping, coupled with a very skeptical understanding of Windows XP. It kind of annoys me that IfoEdit isn't pro WinXP. Another example, is that I used to program MIDI files on a DOS based program known as Voyetra Gold, in the days when I was a full time muso. But apparently, Win XP doesn't "understand" DOS. Ultimately, I'd like to eventually create music of my own to complement the movies I wanna do (home movies, that is) and now I keep finding out yet more disappointing aspects to WinXP. Or is it just my limited understanding of Win XP? I mean, I actually enjoy Win XP, I think? A penny for your thoughts?

At work here we have an "Enterprise Agreement" with Microsoft. Basically we can have any version of Windows and Office Pro we like.

Today all the guys who had upgraded themselves to XP last month switched back to 2000. Imho XP tries to do too much for you, rather than letting you tell it how things are done.

Just my $0.02

Oh, and if anybody has seen dd's movie, I'd still like to know if the guy gets eaten.

Horace_64, before you go for DVD2One, I'd suggest you give DVD Shrink a try. It's free. ;)

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm#download

That way if you're happy with the results you'll have saved some cash. :)
If not you can then try DVD2One.

Hi dd!!

Thanx pal. The pics you sent me- well, on looking at them again i find it almost impossible to see any obvious differnces in them. I get the impression you were trying to tell me something, and lets just say that you've made your point and saved me some cash!! 78r,

I will more than likely have a series of general questions to ask you, in the near future- either tomorrow, sunday or monday (depending on my schedual)- Or would that be a problem regarding the rules? Right now, in any event, I've gotta get some sleep- we'll talk soon- thanx again for the tip on DVD Shrink :-)
