Just tried to play NCAA 07 and it would just go to browser each time i tried to load the game. I then tried a retail Madden disk and it loaded for a min but then froze. Is there a simple way of knowing you need a new lazer? My ps2 is old, (over 3 years) and I have a magic 3.1 mod chip

If you still cant load games successfully after cleaning the laser, and adjusting the white cog, or drive tilt screw beside the laser, then I'd suggest (having exhausted all options) that a new laser is required.
However, with the cost of a new laser being 2/3 the cost of a pre-owned, reconditioned PS2, I'd suggest getting a pre-owned PS2, rather than just the laser unit. Eg: In UK a new laser costs £30, add the cost of P&P at approx £5, plus the cost of fitting at £10, equals £45 for a new laser. You can pick up a pre-owned PS2 for approx £55 - £70, depending on the retailer.
