I'm having some strange problems with my PS2. Its pretty old (v4) but i rarely use it. Well the other day I turned it all on and it seems broken :( It powers up fine, and on screen I see some coloured bars for about 1 second which dissapear, then the screen goes black and the control pad just rumbles. Then nothing happens except rumbling..
Is it dead?
Cheers,
Jon

First off, use Edit instead of double-posting(against the rules).
Wow, I have never seen this kind of problem. Could you specify when the beeping sound occurs? Okay, I'll take a guess at this. Power's there, colored bars for 1 second(resembles when a TV channel has techinical difficulties, right?), constant controller vibrations...., hmmm.... there may be some sort of problem with something on the motherboard. Is this a 50hz(PAL) system or a 60hz(NTSC) system? It could be that the frequency is wrong, or maybe you have broken connections somewhere. I don't know. Just guessing what may be the problem because not once in my 7 months or so here at AfterDawn, I have seen this problem.

Is your PS2 modded? Seems like I might have heard something like this on chipped systems a long time ago.

Hey,
Sorry for the double post.
The beeping noise occurs while the colored bars are on the screen before the controller starts to rumble.
If i power up without a controller the system just hangs with the colored bars and a long beeping noise and thats all it does..
Its a PAL system and not modded.
If anyone's got any ideas i'd be pleased to hear, otherwise I will have to just give up and buy a new system :(

I think the console is giving the wrong frequency. If it's a frequency problem, you would need an oscilloscope to fix it up. It may also be a cable or something on the motherboard. If all else fails, you need either a new console, or a motherboard that matches your PlayStation 2's current motherboard. I don't know because, like I said, I have never heard of anyone encountering this problem.
