I can't tell whats going on at all. The odd thing is that since my laptop is still in warranty, I already even changed my drive for a new one (the one above) and the first time it DID read the cd, but upon next try (after a reboot), it wouldn't recognize cd's anymore.

Thanks for any suggestions

First you are in the shrink forum. I'm sure you'll be moved soon.

Normally when something like this happens it is because the laser has gone out. I see that you said you put in a new drive, and are still having the same problem.

Right click "My Computer" and select properties.
Under the hardware tab you will see the device manager. Of course this is assuming that you are running XP. Select the device manager and scroll down to your drive.

Now if there is an "! or ?" next to it then the driver is not installed properly. You can remove the driver from the device manager and then reboot the machine. Allow windows to search for driver or if you have the original then use that.

Post back and let me know if that helped.

I forgot to tell you two things.
Welcome to AD & edit your post. You need to mark out your serial number.

Hello. Try resetting with Device Manager.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager Button.
Click the "+" beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
One at a time, right click on each of the IDE channels and select Uninstall.
Back in Device Manager, clcik the "+" beside DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on the name of the DVD burner and select Uninstall.
Restart the system.

Laptop burners are finicky and fragile.

If the drive is still under warranty, contact the vendor.

Thanks syxguns and laddyboy but I have alreaddy tried what you suggest before. The system doesn't recognize any problems with the device, not even before when I had the old drive. In fact even before I made my change of drive I tried to reinstall it and I've also tried it with the new one, but still nothing.

Hope someone can think of something else to help me, I'd really appreciate that.

Oh, and Syxguns thanks for the welcome and the thing about the S/N.

Hi.

If the drive/laptop is still under warranty, the company may have to sort this out for you?

Do you have any Roxio or other DVD/CD burning software installed? Is Nero InCD installed? Is Nero installed?

What software are you using to burn DVDs and CDs?

Either this drive is bad or there some conflicting software/driver.
