Hey guys

Till recently, I've owned a v4 ps2 but the motherboard started giving problems and i've had to scrap it. Could anyone give me any reason, apart from the decreased size, why i'd rather buy a 2nd hand v12/13 slimline over the v11?
I'd like to have the ability to install an internal HDD without having to install an HD connect/combo, and going for the v11 is the better alternative in this respect.
I know that a newer console will have a better laser, but since i'm planning on playing games off the HDD, this isn't really a concern.
Can I expect any kind of better performance out of a slimline?

Thanks

No, I actually think the older models were all around better systems.
And with a hard drive on a slim model you are looking at shelling out some serious money between the HD Combo Case and install.
Best set up for a hard drive would be a premodded older system with a DMS4 Pro SE chip.

Thanks for the reply. Installation costs don't figure into my equation, I can and will do them myself. In your opinion, how are the older models better systems?

Cooling is one of the major advantages. The slim PlayStation 2s have a reputation for overheating due to poor cooling(the fan is inside the system so duh). Also, with the slim, you need an add-on to install an IDE hard drive(like Steimy said, the HD Connect/Combo). But, it's best to go for a Version 7 instead of a Version 11. Are you in Europe, because that's the only place I know the Version 11 was sold. Has that laser problem from the Version 9 and 10 been fixed in the Version 11? If it hasn't, don't get a Version 11. The laser problem, in case you don't know what it is, is caused by a chip on the motherboard(the LA chip). This one controls the laser's focus coils when a scratched disc or crap media is put in the console. This is supposed to deliver a voltage of 5v, but the chip delivers 12v, which is dangerous. Either the chip will be fried because of it overheating, rendering your laser useless, or it will mess up your laser's ribbon cable up to the point where the chip will no longer work and kill your laser. You should also avoid the Version 12. That model has a laser problem too, but this time, the laser(coils and diodes) runs at a voltage that's too high, which can make the laser burn out. Here's how it stands:
If you want a fat, go for the Version 7
If you want a slim, go for the Version 13
Don't go Version 14 because the solder points for HD Connect/HD Combo have been removed. You'll be stuck with a crappy USB hard drive.

yep, that pretty much sums it up.
I didn't mention the V7 because you did not mention it, but the V5/6 and V7 were 2 of the best. i owned one of each and both are still running as of this day. I had a new laser and DMS4 Pro put into the V5/6 and "donated" it to a friend of mine. he loves it, especially with the chip as he was using a V4 with Swap Magic and slide card before that :( booo!

The very best thing you could do if you really want the ultimate system is save up, go to Teammodders.com, spend the $220 for a premodded V7 with DMS4 Pro SE chip.
That chip has all the features you need to run the hard drive, format it, install & delete games, run homebrew apps and games and so much more. unlike other set ups you will not have to remove the hard drive and put it in your PC every time you want to add a game onto it, the chip can copy them strait from the disc or back up disc. and you do not need to buy HD Advance/HD Loader as that is also built in, also a built in cheat device as well.

But the choice is yours to make. Go cheap and be moderately happy. Go go big and be extremely happy.

and in closing let me mention that the hard drive creates extra heat so if you get a slim you HAVE to get an HD Combo case. It will make it internal and also has 2 fans rather than just one to help with the heat of the hard drive and chip. I have a V12 with this set up as you can see in my sig.

Thanks guys, in two posts you have solidified all the information i've been correlating for the last few days. The reason I mentioned the v11 was that there was a local listing for one in an auction site, and I assumed that v11 > v7 (clearly not:). The only problem with shelling out $220 for the pre-modded v7 would be the shipping costs as I'm in South Africa. But i'll look into that, it's a great price with a DSM4 pro included and i don't have to fiddle with tiny solder points myself.
Keep up the good work, you're an asset to this community.

No problem. Nice to see some people appreciate the help that the members give them. Most unfortunately do not. They get their answers and move on. Did not know your location, but i suppose the shipping would be quite a bit. It is real nice to get a premodded system that is ready to go right out of the box though. but it could be quite expensive getting it from here to there.
