Freeze Fix:
Unplug the ehternet cable, or disconnect from being signed in.

No good if you want to play online, but at least you can enjoy the game until a patch is released.

I agree with kingrob. I have an original 60gb PS3 and here's my experience with GTA4:

1) Installed: no problem. Watched opening intro.
2) Took the cousin to his house - locked up when we triggered the cut scene.
3) Rebooted, locked up on loading screen.
4) Rebooted, locked up on loading screen again.
5) Deleted all data, reinstalled no problem, started game over.
6) Played for about an hour, no problem. Shut it off.
7) Started up today, locked up on loading screen.
8) Quit the game, signed off of PS network
9) Restarted the game - loaded no problems, and no lock ups since.

Anecdotal evidence to be sure, but it seems like logging off PSN "fixes" the lockups we're having. BTW: I've found that when the game locks on the loading screen I can still use the PS button on the remote to quit, however it causes the PS3 to reboot. Still, I believe that's safer than doing a hard-reboot.

This is why I usually have 2 save files for every game. If you're at point where it always freezes, in particular, you just know it's going to freeze at that point, just load the other save.

I update each one every other time. Yeah, it'll suck to do the mission one more time, but it's better than always dealing with a freeze and/or a corrupt file.

Maybe that'll help?

But as others have said, if this many people are having this many problems, I'm sure Rockstar will release a patch soon.

Hi, I'm having a problem with GTA now too, I can play the main game no problem, and the multiplayer WAS working great too, NOW however everytime I select the multiplayer option from my phone it signs me in then when I go to click Games it freezes, I've tried numerous times, I've even tried waiting for a moment THEN pressing but it freezes before I press, any ideas?
I started a new game as i've used cheats in this one but it still doesn't work unfortunately, should I remove my game data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i've been searching around forums and it seems no one else has this issue from what i've seen.

Forgot to mention I have a PS3 40gb lol.

i had the same problem. Just sign out of the PSN and play it offline. Do not go online or it will freeze. Before I knew this I was about to rip the head off the gamestop employee who sold me a defective game. But no worries he spared. lol

Got this from another site...

So there you are, playing GTA IV on the PS3, having the time of your life, and then... it freezes!! Waaah!!! What the fudge!? Hopefully, this hasn't happened to you, but if it does, don't shoot your tv just yet. Take Two has released a series of possible fixes for the problem that I'm going to post below.

1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information.

2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete.

3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this.

4) Disable the console's information board. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Information Board', highlight this and press triangle. From the menu select 'Do not display' Press X to confirm this.

5) Disable Media Server functionality. Scroll to Settings, now scroll up / down to 'Network Settings' select Media Server connection. Once this has been done press triangle and change the option Disabled.

6) Delete all of the system's Internet cache. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Internet Browser', highlight this and press X. Once you browser opens press the triangle button once, from the new menu highlight the 'Tools' option and press X. Scroll down the menu until you reach 'Delete Cookies' and press X. Confirm the files deletion. Repeat this for 'Delete Cache'.

7 ) Turn off the PS3 screen saver. Use the cross media bar to scroll to 'Settings', select 'Display Settings'. Now highlight 'Screensaver' and set this to 'Do not use'.

8 ) Once this has been done, manually restart you PS3 by holding down the power button for 5 seconds it will beep once and then shut down. Release the power button and re-press it and hold for about 5 seconds. The system will then boot and reset all display settings. You will be prompted to reset your display settings to how you require them.

9) Once restarted please try the game again, you will be prompted to reinstall.

Once the game has started please turn off the following features:

1) The game's auto-save. Press Start, Game, and locate the Auto-save option. Turn this off.

2) Turn off the game's flicker filter. Press Start, Display and locate the Flicker Filter option. Turn this off.

3) Turn off the controller vibration feature. Press Start, Controls and locate the vibration option. Turn this off.

Personally, Someone told me to just disable the Internet Connection in Network Settings, I did so and started a game. It hasnt froze at all.. I let it idle for 2 hours and not one freeze, normally it freezes when I let it idle after about 5-10 minutes, every single time.. Like a freakn heartbeat...

Aight.. I think I got it... It has to be something to do with the Multiplayer feature, because I have had problems since day 1, usually it freezes up atleast 1 or 2 times every few minutes or if I let the game idle without pausing and it freezes after 5- 10 min, everytime. So I disables Internet Connection in the network settings and been playing for 3 hours without a hiccup...

I've also noticed that before the crash the rain effects on the pavement are great and the lighting effects on the cars are super. After a restart they're not as reflective as before, it becomes a duller version.

thats what i was saying earlier in this post. everyone gave this game a 10 but i've found a lot of flaws. lets not kid ourselves... this is a really really good game i mean i would give it like a 9.5 (since i learned how to drive a little better) but a 10? c'mon! I mean how many of you can honestly say they have played a "perfect" game? and by perfect i dont just mean gameplay im talkking all around. no clipping, no glitching, no freezing, great controls, always fun gameplay no matter what the mission or task? lots of replay value. if anyone here can tell me the name of the perfect videogame please let me know. In my opinion if any game gets a 10 it would be mario 3 for me. i still play that damn game. but im talking about current games.

Zelda 3 - A link to the past. Absolute perfection IMHO.

I'm on Day 3 of playing with no lock ups since I signed out of PSN. All of the other recommendations seem to be irrelevant. Just sign out of PSN, and make sure that "auto sign-in" is off so you don't accidentally sign back in when you power the system up and you should have no more problems.

I agree, but what has annoyed me most about this game is the fact that 2 players from the same console can't play online together, if I could've this game would be a 10 lol.
When you DO get online it's AMAZING!

I smell firmware 2.31 coming in the near future. Maybe the people having problems will have no more problems if the problem is the hardware after a firmware update. There is no guarantee that this is even going to happen or if it is even possible.

Ok, so this is what i think off the game after a few days worth of playing

I really do love a lot about this game. I love the new driving style, i love the new aiming system.

However i really dont like how theyv'e taken out pretty much all replay value out of this game.

I mean wheres the hundreds of car garages to store your best found cars? Also wheres the car modifications? Wheres the massive mansion with the heli pad and the spawning helicopter? Wheres the buisneses you can buy?

Also a fatal flaw i feel is theres not enough to do with your money. Apart from going to eat / paying tolls, weapons taxis and clothes. Theres nothing.

I feel that they've tried to make this one far too real. I mean i loved owning san andreas and having a unbelievable jet pack. And an airstrip. I loved modding up cars with nitrous and driving through the city. I dunno i just miss a lot of lost features from san andreas. What you guys think?

i agree with you on that one, ive got like $300,000 and the only thing i really spend it on is when i die. It's a perfectly good game, but there could have been more of some thing and less of others.

THIS IS REGARDING GTA4 CHEATS

ive been reading in various cheat sites that if you use the cell phone cheats for armor/guns n such that u will lose the ability to earn achievements if you save later on. the only problem is that achievements only apply to xbox 360 and since we all own ps3s im trying to find out what drawbacks are there for using the cheats on PS3. Our am I mistaken and there are some achievements to be earned on the PS3 that I dont know abut??
